GPRS and 3G Wireless Applications
Developer Tools - Below you can find a collection of some tools that I have found valuable and that many of the developers
I have worked with are using. Most of the time I unfortunately have to direct you to the overall developer site in question in
order for you to register. This is however most of the time well worth it because of the value you get in return. These
companies all depend on the well-being of developers like yourself so they try hard to take care of you. If there is some tool
you think I missed, you can drop me a line at christoffer@wirelessdevnet.com. If I get many requests for one tool I'll put it up
here.
Phone manufacturers:
Ericsson Developers' Zone -
Here you find SDK's and whitepapers concerning Ericsson's phones and servers. This includes: Positioning server API,
Phone emulators, style guides and whitepapers, Bluetooth developer's guidelines and much more
Motorola Developer Resources -
Motorola also has a fair chunk of useful tools and resources targeted at their products. Especially those working with iDEN applications (a not-so-common
network, used by Nextel in the US) should check this one out. Motorola is also early with J2ME enabled phones.
Nokia Forum -
Just like the other giant phone makers, Nokia has a developer site packet with useful tools and whitepapers. For example you can find information on how to
develop for the EPOC based Communicator.
Operating Systems:
EpocWorld -
This is the official Symbian site with developer tools and whitepapers to get you started on the Symbian EPOC platform. Here you can for instance find a
whitepaper on how to develop Bluetooth applications in EPOC and there are many more useful things like that.
PalmOS -
Palm is well known for its support for developers and this is one of the reasons behind the success of the platform. Here is the official source for info, tools and
emulators.
PocketPC -
Microsoft's baby in the mobile Internet device race is of course supported with loads of tools. Don't get confused just because many of the developers' tools
are the same for pocket PC as for other platforms(maybe it was just me...). This is by the way the place to read up on Microsoft's new .NET technology.
Other:
Bill Day J2ME archive - J2ME was just hitting people's attention when I wrote the book so I only dedicated a small part of the book to it. It is indeed a very interesting technology and
Bill Day is the guy to guide you through it. Look at that list of SDK's and emulators!!! If you are interested in a book on the topic, I recommend
Eric Giguere's Guide.
BigWAPsite -
A collection of quite a few WAP tools... Understatement of the century!
