LBS AT CTIA'S WIRELESS 2002
New Location-Based Services Demonstration Showcased ESRI GIS and Tele Atlas Map Data -
The LBS demonstration is a conceptual example of how LBS companies can use ESRI's Geography Network
(www.geographynetwork.com) with Tele Atlas data to enable their wireless services. In the demo, as in real life, a wireless device-be it a PDA, phone, pager, onboard car navigation system, or wireless Web-enabled laptop-sends a query to a back office application. The user of the wireless device can
send a request such as "find the shortest route to an address," or "find all gas stations in a 10-mile radius." Based on the location of the device, Tele Atlas data attributes are summoned by ESRI technology, and a list of requested services is provided along with a detailed route.

Seattle-based e-city Software held an LBS demonstration which showcased how consumers will soon be able to access information hosted on ESRI's geographynetwork.com from any mobile device quickly and
easily. Built using the ESRI Geography Network and Geographic Information Services with E-City's CityMap data, wireless devices can render E-City 3D maps instantly based on a user's location,'' said Jon Spinney, Location Based Services Industry Manager at ESRI. ``E-City's map data adds a new dimension to location-based services. The ESRI and E-City demonstration allowed CTIA conference attendees to visualize their surroundings and destinations from a 3D perspective.'' As a result of the tremendous support and assistance of the Location Based Services group at ESRI and other strategic
partners at the CTIA show, E-City received expressions ofinterest and began strategic alliance and/or joint marketing dialogue with Cingular, Nextel, Alltell, Verizon, Motorola, Qualcomm, Nokia and NTT DoCoMo, in addition to over 100 follow-up inquiries initiated by wireless industry representatives at CTIA that E-City is in the process of responding to.

CTIA selected an LBS demonstration for its Wireless Widget Showcase, which highlighted the hottest products in wireless and wireless data for 2002. The wireless vehicle services demonstration displays WebTech's GPRS/GPS telematics device and vehicle services portal interoperating with the ADS Graphics Master(R) Computing System (Microsoft's WIN CE.Net OS) to display real-time vehicle applications including Pharos voice enabled Navigation, WebTech's GPS Tracking, Messaging and high-speed Internet connectivity services.

Pharos Science & Applications Inc., and Microsoft Corporation teamed up at CTIA Wireless 2002 to let attendees test drive mobile GPS navigation for themselves. Attendees at the Pharos booth in the Microsoft Partner Pavilion received a Pocket PC and a Pharos' Pocket GPS Navigation. From there, users were given coordinates and directions in order to get to various points around the Orange County Convention Center to obtain clues. After collecting all clues, participants then dropped of the units and were eligible to win a nifty prize.
