Epoc UID
by Richard Bloor
Program and File Identification on EPOC
Unlike many other operating systems EPOC does not identify files by their suffix. For example, in Windows with MS Office loaded any application with the file suffix doc is assumed to be an MS Word file. In EPOC each application is assigned a UID (Unique Identification) number which is stamped on the application and any files it creates. This ensures that a file is opened by the right application. To guarantee uniqueness Symbian centrally co-ordinates the assignment of UIDs.
UID and Development
During the development process you can use a UID from the hexadecimal range &00000001 to &0FFFFFFF. These development UID's should not be used however for applications when they are released.
UID and Released Application
When your application is in a state ready for release you should apply to Symbian for a release UID. Up to 10 UID's can be ordered at any one time (although more than 10 can be issued with an appropriate explanation).
Additional information on UIDs can be found on the Symbian Devnet.
