Symbian Platform DFRDs

The Device Family Reference Designs or DFRDs were introduced with the release of v6.0 of the Symbian platform in November 2000. They provide the blueprints for implementing the Symbian platform on different hardware form factors.

Currently there are three DFRDs:

  • Pearl, for Smartphone devices where voice is the predominant application.


A Pearl Style Device


  • Quartz, for Mediaphones devices where data and voice applications are balanced


The Ericsson Communicator Concept


  • Crystal, for Communicator devices, where wireless data based applications predominate
