Report from the 2002 Nokia Mobile Internet conference (NMIC)

Nov. 5-7, 2002 - by Glenn Letham, Editor, WirelessDevNet.com

Supported Devices - Nokia has announced it will announce a new "game deck" product category as well as several products that complement and take advantage of the MMS capabilities of the latest devices.
Nokia N-Gage - Get ready for the "game-deck"; word of this product likely created the most hype at the 2002 NMIC. Nokia has officially thrown their hat into the gaming arena with the announcement of the N-Gage. The purpose of this device is to introduce users to a rich, interactive mobile gaming experience. The game deck will run on the Series 60 and the Symbian OS, with Near-distance, multi-player gaming made possible via Bluetooth connectivity. Games will be distributed on memory cards, with the catalog expected to grow over time as Nokia enters into partnerships with the World's leading game publishers. Most recently, the company has struck a deal with Sega, the world's leading game publisher, to bring Sega branded titles to market for the game deck category. With Nokia acting as the publisher, Game developers around the globe are expected to see new revenue opportunities arise from porting their existing games and apps to the Symbian OS. Executives from Nokia promise that devices and SDKs will be available in the near future (Feb. 2003) and that the N-Guage will offer a gaming experience more rich than what is offered by GameBoy Advance. Oh, we almost forgot... the N-Gage is also a phone!

Nokia Camera Headset - Those of you interested in some of the latest devices but would like an integrated camera, don't worry, Nokia has made available the Nokia Camera Headset - a small, light-weight camera that is functional with all of the latest Nokia MMS phones. Expected to be available in December 2002, the camera combines a digital VGA and basic hands-free functionality of a typical heaset. It operates much like any other digital camera where the user previews an image through an optical viewfinder, optionaly selecting high or low quality image. Once taken, the image is automatically transfered to the device where it can then be send to friends using MMS. The camera receives its power from the phone. The following devices support the Camera headset: 7210, 6610, 5100, 6100, and 6800.

Nokia Observation Camera - This product definitely created a "buzz" at this year's NMIC. The observation camera is a digital camera, GMS tranceiver, MMS compatible, and its motion detected! The pupose of the camera is to provide users with the ability to see in places when you can't be there. Users request the unit to capture an image via SMS, the observation camera captures the image and then sends a picture to the hosts MMS enabled handset. Pictures can also be captured and sent automatically when motion is detected or at predetermined intervals. In adition to imaging, users can call the observation camera and place a request to listen to the surroundings or even receive the current temperature. Available in 2003 in Europe, Africa, Asia. Features of the Observation Camera:
