    Pocket Controller-Professional V2.00

WirelessDevNet takes a look at the who, what, where, when, and why of Pocket Controller, a nifty tool that lets you control and operate your Pocket PC using your desktop screen, keyboard and mouse. (November 20, 2001)

    Who:

    Soft Object Technologies Inc
    Email : carl@soti.net

    What:

Pocket Controller lets you control and operate your Pocket PC using your desktop screen, keyboard and mouse. You can also Activate or Stop applications and processes, capture screens, print screens, execute DOS commands, and more.

    Where:

You can get it at http://www.soti.net/

    When:

3days!... a fully functional demo can be downloaded and used for 3 days.

    Why:

This product is painless to install and use. It took me 2 minutes to download, install, and bring up on my computer. For anyone looking for a simple and effective way to document their pocket PC apps or write user manuals this is definitely the way to go. I really like the "recording" functionality. Hit start recording in the Tools menu, perform the desired tasks, end record... that's it... your steps have been recorded in an AVI file. To demo the Record function, I called up another program that I've been testing, ArcPad, a fully functional GIS for the Pocket PC. In the example I load ArcPad, call up a map of Florida counties, perform a quick "identify" call, zoom in, then open a Mr SID (compressed) aerial photo of Melbourne. It's not rocket science but you can see how simple it is to document your steps and use Pocket Controller to create a tutorial or product demonstration. Unfortunately, the AVI file I created was about 100 MB in size! Various compression options are available when recording. A subsequent test resulted in a 37 second demo producing a 3 MB AVI file.
