ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 18, 2001-- Vodafone Global Platform and Internet Service's New Mobile Internet Portal Utilizes TCS Software in New Zealand

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (Nasdaq:TSYS), a key architect of wireless messaging software, announced today that it is providing Mobile Internet software for the Vodafone Global Platform and Internet Services Group (VGP) in New Zealand (LSE:VOD) (NYSE:VOD).

Using TeleCommunication Systems' software, Vodafone New Zealand customers are now able to easily access and download Internet information using either an Internet information portal or a customizable digital retrieval agent to pull Internet or scheduled push information to their mobile phones.

TCS's technology enables Vodafone New Zealand subscribers to pull information from a wide variety of Internet content sources to their mobile phones via TCS's Wireless Internet Gateway and QueryNet(R) software. The two products bridge popular Internet messaging and wireless short message service (SMS) technologies to provide easily accessible mobile Internet services. v SMS is a widely used packet data technology ideally suited for messaging. The Wireless Internet Gateway uses SMS to connect wireless devices to Internet Protocol (IP) services such as e-mail, content services, and other IP-based applications and services. QueryNet(R) is a cross-platform application that allows subscribers to provision their own digital information agents via an intuitive web interface. The agents are subscriber-defined services that access information from either the Internet or a carrier's data portal and deliver the information to a mobile device or an e-mail account.

"We are very pleased the VGP has chosen TCS to work with on its drive to become the premier provider of mobile messaging," said Maurice B. Tose, President and CEO, TeleCommunication Systems. "Our suite of advanced mobile data products allows leading carriers like Vodafone to quickly and easily launch a set of highly innovative messaging services."
