Wireless Knowledge Launcjes Revolutionary New Software For Mobilizing Enterprise Applications
URL(s): wirelessknowlege.com
SAN DIEGO — Wireless Knowledge, Inc., a
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) and QUALCOMM
Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) company, today announced
Echo - software that dramatically simplifies the process of
mobilizing Web-based enterprise applications. Echo enables
businesses to quickly and cost-effectively create applications
that can be accessed on any Internet-ready mobile device -
from phones to PDAs to laptops - using any browser on any
wireless network.
Echo is a high-performance transformation engine that resides
within a company's Web server(s). When a request for data is
received from a Web-enabled mobile device, Echo determines
what type of markup language the device requires, and
instantly translates the HTML output of the requested Web
application into that markup language (such as HTML for Palm
OS devices, HTML for Pocket PCs, WML or HDML for phones).
Simply put, Echo sits on top of Web applications and transforms
their HTML on-the-fly into the appropriate markup language for
mobile devices.
"By consuming, analyzing and transforming the HTML into the
appropriate markup language immediately before it is sent to
the mobile device, Echo remains independent of the
development environment and the application itself," said Ken
Whitaker, vice president of product development for Wireless
Knowledge. "Developers can design a Web application to meet
particular mobile needs, and Echo makes it available to a wide
range of devices running on a wide variety of browsers."
This simple and elegant approach offers many cost-saving
advantages to the enterprise. Unlike transcoding servers on the
market today, Echo does not require maintenance of
annotation or "screen scraping" rules when changes are made
to the source code. Nor does Echo impose proprietary
development tools or languages on an enterprise development
staff. Its unique and unobtrusive implementation allows for
immediate mobility benefits without the intense training or
maintenance implications of other solutions.
Echo also allows enterprise users to securely access corporate
data residing in strategic applications such as enterprise
resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship
management (CRM) software, as well as in proprietary
applications and Web sites.
In developing Echo, Wireless Knowledge leveraged its
extensive expertise in mobilizing applications for enterprise
customers.
"The seeds for Echo were sown over the past few years as our
engineers researched the latest devices and their browser
requirements, learned new development tools, and coded,
re-coded, and coded some more," said Whitaker. "To simplify
things for the developer, we invented a 'better mousetrap.' We
are now commercializing this proven, core mobility technology
and extending its value to the business world."
A key benefit of Echo software is that it insulates developers
from the complexities of mobile device compatibility, allowing
them to use the development tools their company has already
invested in. Echo resides on the existing Web infrastructure,
providing a lightweight and scalable mobility solution.
"Enterprises looking to mobilize key applications need solutions
that shorten time-to-market and leverage existing IT
investments," said Kelly Quinn, senior analyst at the Aberdeen
Group. "Echo is a solution that was created to solve a problem,
not a solution created to demonstrate a flashy technology or to
jump on the bandwagon of wireless hype."
Commerce One Global Services, a division of Commerce One,
Inc., the e-marketplace company, has purchased a license for
the Echo solution from Wireless Knowledge in order to extend
the expertise of Commerce One's mobile commerce practice.
"We envision that e-marketplaces will rapidly become the core
platform for all types of inter-company activities, including
buying, selling and collaboration," said Kevin Schick, vice
president of solution marketing for Commerce One. "As a
result, e-marketplaces require solutions that let users interact
anytime, anywhere. We believe that Echo complements our
existing e-marketplace solutions and will help extend
e-marketplace access to mobile platforms."
Echo currently runs on the Microsoft IIS 4.0 for Windows NT
and Microsoft IIS 5.0 for Windows 2000 platforms. In addition,
Echo is fully compatible with the soon-to-be released Microsoft
Mobile Information 2001 Server Enterprise Edition. Future plans
include support for iPlanet and Apache, as well as for the Linux
and Unix operating systems. For companies looking for turnkey
mobile application development, Wireless Knowledge also
offers a runtime version of the product combined with mobility
services from its Professional Services group.
Echo is available now to enterprises, system integrators and
independent software vendors to expedite the mobilization of
their key applications, projects or products. Echo may be
purchased directly from Wireless Knowledge or through its
worldwide partner network.
