Nokia and Tellabs to Develop Solutions for Next-Generation Mobile Networks

LISLE, Ill., April 30 -- Tellabs announced today that it has signed an agreement with Nokia Networks, the infrastructure arm of Nokia Corporation, to develop products that help mobile carriers migrate to third- generation (3G) wireless networks. This agreement is another step in the previously announced collaboration between Nokia and Tellabs.

Under terms of the agreement, Tellabs and Nokia will further develop an integrated transmission solution for the 3G radio access network for Nokia. Tellabs also will expand its network management system, the MartisDXX(R) Manager system, to control transmission equipment and provide end-to-end management for the 3G asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) radio access transmission network.

"Tellabs' expanded relationship with Nokia will provide mobile operators a platform to easily monitor their networks and quickly deliver new services," said Heikki Hiltunen, vice president and general manager of Tellabs' Europe, Middle East and Africa region. "Tellabs is a leading provider of mobile transmission, and Nokia is a leading provider of mobile infrastructure. By working together, we can develop an aligned solution that better serves our customers and gives them a clear competitive advantage."

To help quickly meet customer demand for 3G solutions, Tellabs is establishing a new research and development team next to Nokia's research and development site in Duesseldorf, Germany.

"Nokia and Tellabs share the same technological vision for future mobile networks and third generation network architecture," said Pekka Soini, vice president and general manager of Nokia Networks, Wireless Broadband Systems. "We will jointly develop transmission products and solutions for the next- generation mobile networks under the same general architecture."

The first outcome of this collaboration will be a further development of 3G base station integrated ATM cell switch and transmission solution for the radio access network. This solution will benefit mobile operators who are building or migrating to 3G mobile markets as well as 2G operators considering new investments in their networks.

In 80 countries around the globe, Tellabs helps the world's leading communications service providers build tomorrow's converged networks of voice, data and video. Tellabs employees design, build and service optical networking, broadband access and voice-quality enhancement equipment. Today most telephone calls and Internet sessions in the United States flow through equipment from Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB) ( www.tellabs.com ).

Nokia is the world leader in mobile communications. Backed by its experience, innovation, user-friendliness and secure solutions, the company has become the leading supplier of mobile phones and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks. By adding mobility to the Internet Nokia creates new opportunities for companies and further enriches the daily lives of people. Nokia is a broadly held company with listings on six major exchanges.
