AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2001--
Mobile Phone, PDA, Handheld PC, Video Camera, Digital Camera and Automotive Monitor
Markets Covered
DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in FPD market research and consulting, released a
breakthrough quarterly report covering display shipments by supplier and display procurement by
brand in six different display applications featuring small and medium-sized displays -- mobile
phones, PDAs, handheld PCs, video cameras, digital cameras and automotive monitors (car
navigation systems, car TVs and automotive information systems).
The new 100+ page report, the "Quarterly Small/Medium LCD Shipment Report," provides
display shipments in units and revenues for each application by display technology, type
(monochrome vs. color), panel size, resolution and supplier. Actual shipments are provided for
Q4'00 and Q1'01 with shipments forecasted for Q2'01 and Q3'01. The report also provides
display procurement by brand by application and display technology. Display procurement data is a
strong indicator of future system shipments.
According to DisplaySearch President Ross Young, "With large-area displays priced at or below
cost, a growing number of suppliers are entering or are studying the small/medium display market.
This report provides significant intelligence on which small/medium markets are growing the fastest
and slowest, which sizes are gaining and losing ground, which suppliers are gaining and losing share
and which markets face the most and least competition.
"It also reveals the relationships between panel suppliers and brands and which brands are
winning the most business. We highly recommend this report to all companies competing or
considering entering these markets."
The first issue of this report reveals:
--
All applications declined sequentially in Q1'01 due to traditional seasonal weakness. The
mobile phone display market declined the fastest due to seasonal weakness as well as growing
channel inventories.
--
Q1'01 mobile phone display shipments fell 15% sequentially to 104.2 million units.
Monochrome STN LCDs accounted for 87% of shipments with color STN LCDs and
AMLCDs accounting for 10% and 3% respectively. By panel supplier, Epson led with a 30%
share and accounted for 56% of AMLCD shipments. Nokia and its OEMs led the Q1'01
market in display procurement accounting for 34% of mobile display shipments.
--
Q1'01 PDA/handheld PC shipments fell 4% sequentially to 3.5 million units. 61% of Q1'01
shipments featured monochrome STN LCDs with color STN LCDs at 8% and AMLCDs at
31%. By panel supplier, Sharp accounted for 52% of AMLCD shipments into this market. By
brand, Palm accounted for 58% of the displays shipped into this market. PDAs account for
over 90% of shipments in this category.
--
The Q1'01 AMLCD automotive monitor market fell 12% sequentially to 1.05 million units. It
is currently dominated by 5.8" wide TFT LCDs. Sharp led this market with a 44% share in
Q1'01 while Denso was the top brand/OEM procuring 19% of display shipped into this
market.
--
The Q1'01 AMLCD video camera market fell just 2% sequentially to 3.12 million units. It is
dominated by 2.5" TFT LCDs which gathered a 74% share in Q1'01. Sharp was the top
supplier with a 24.5% share while Sony was the top brand on a display procurement basis
with a 41% share.
--
The Q1'01 AMLCD digital camera market fell 12% sequentially to 3.63 million units. It was
dominated by 1.8" AMLCDs which gathered a 64% share. 1.5" displays are expected to gain
significant share in the future due to cost cutting requirements. Sanyo was the top supplier with
a 30% share. By brand, Sony led with a 22% share on a display procurement basis.
The "Quarterly Small/Medium LCD Shipment Report" is available in English and Japanese, in
printed and electronic format, and is priced from $5,995 to $6,995. DisplaySearch is also holding
