CUPERTINO, Calif. & ATLANTA, June 5, 2001--
SIP-based Softswitch the Cornerstone of the Company's VoIP Architecture
Mockingbird Networks, a global leader in Voice-over-IP (VoIP) infrastructure solutions for next generation service providers,
introduced at SUPERCOMM 2001 today its Impresaria ESS enhanced services softswitch. Impresaria ESS acts as the operating
system for Mockingbird Networks' industry-leading Voice Services Infrastructure (VSI) architecture that provides an open
applications interface, a complete suite of business infrastructure software, and media services gateways for efficient deployment of
market-differentiating enhanced voice and Web-driven services.
According to Mockingbird President and CEO Craig Forney, "Service providers are concerned with not only reducing the cost of
operations, but also with building customer loyalty and profitability in the long term. Their ability to deliver enhanced services will assist
them in attracting and retaining a loyal customer base. Mockingbird ESS provides the service providers with a mechanism to rapidly
create, deploy and manage these profitable new services."
Impresaria ESS provides an overlaying solution, leveraging existing network build-out as it delivers its voice services capabilities.
Impresaria ESS interoperates with legacy local and tandem switches by providing complete signaling support, including SS7, ISDN,
and Feature Group D. It supports existing subscriber equipment such as black phones and fax machines as well as legacy circuit-based
access including T1 CAS and ISDN PRI. And, through its SIP-based signaling, it provides an integrated hand-off to VoIP core
networks.
The two primary components of Impresaria ESS are the Mockingbird SIP Server (MSS) and the Mockingbird Media Gateway
Controller (MGC). MSS is a SIP-based message router and handler that supports all call routing and switching services within its
domain. In addition, MSS provides centralized authentication and CDR services. Supporting SIP and SIP+, MSS communicates with
other SIP-based softswitches and SIP devices.
MGC is a call agent that manages calls across the IP network. MGC runs the call control program that performs the translation
between PSTN protocols (e.g., CAS, IDSN and SS7) and the SIP protocol. MGC supports packet-based protocols such as MGCP
and SIP, which allows the MGC to communicate with Mockingbird's SIP Server and control the Company's family of media
gateways.
Impresaria ESS allows rapid deployment of third party applications via industry-standard protocols and VoiceXML interfaces. The
state-of-the-art VoiceXML API developed by Mockingbird Networks will simplify service development, and integration. New
services such as Debit Card Service, Unified Messaging, Conferencing, etc. can be integrated from any application developers' source,
allowing service providers to dramatically drive down their operation costs while speeding up time-to-revenue.
Impresaria ESS can support up to 720,000 BHCA (Busy Hour Call Attempts) per node and up to 500 simultaneous calls per
second. It is based on a highly scalable, commercially available Sun Microsystems server platform.
Impresaria ESS complies with MGCP, SIP, SS7-ISUP, and ISDN-PRI, allowing seamless internetworking between existing and
next generation networks. Impresaria ESS is interoperable with a wide range of industry softswitches via SIP+ protocol.
Impresaria ESS will be available in the third quarter.

compatibility, making them the platform of choice of forward-thinking OEMs and service providers. Founded in 1997, Silicon
Valley-based Mockingbird Networks is a privately held company with top-tier venture funding from Alcatel Ventures, Technology
Crossover Ventures, and others.
