BT Expects to Achieve Cost Savings of $33.35 Million with MapInfo Solution
URL(s): MapInfo
TROY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 2001-- MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq:MAPS) today
announced that BT has selected its technology to provide a
comprehensive location-based solution to its 17,000 field service engineers, which will enable them to
respond to and
rectify network problems faster and more effectively. The solution provides the key element of an overall
project aimed at
reducing the amount of time spent locating customers' premises and in pinpointing network problems,
culminating in an
expected $33.35 million savings over the next five years.
The location-based solution provides field service engineers with detailed maps of business and residential
customers'
ducts and cables and access to accurate information on the location of the customers' premises. It enables
users to first
locate a property and then progressively zoom in to view road networks and local plant and network
details, the location of
underground ducts and finally the individual cables within each duct. The ability to see the proximity of the
network to the
customer saves further time and effort and leads to improved customer service.
"We are confident we will be able to recognize significant ROI and eliminate our reliance on a paper-based
system
using MapInfo technology," said David Berrington, program manager for customer service, BT Retail.
"Integrated with
BT's award-winning work allocation system and combined with our initiative to remotely pinpoint network
problems,
MapInfo's solution provides our engineers with faster access to information in the field and will ultimately
enable us to
deliver superior customer service."
"In today's competitive marketplace, it is clear that location-based services must be at the heart of any
successful
customer service operation," said Michael Hickey, executive vice president, sales and marketing, MapInfo.
"Being able to
accurately locate where customers are in relation to assets, services and networks is critical for improving
operational
efficiencies and delivering enhanced customer service. BT will recognize very tangible business benefits
utilizing
MapInfo's location technology -- in this case, an expected $33.35 million."
The BT solution is comprised of MapInfo MapX(R), a component-based mapping engine integrated with
maps and
plant data from BT's eRecord system. BT also uses MapInfo(R) MapMarker(R), a geocoding solution,
which enables the
engineers to type in an address or postcode in order to locate the customer on a detailed map and MapInfo
Drivetime(R)
to deliver details of the quickest route to the customer or fault. MapInfo data products ensure that all
relevant data is
captured and incorporated into the solution.
