International Internet and Cellular Telephone Use Creates Immense Demand for Wireless Wide Area Networks

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- 06th July, 2001 -- An international boom in internet use and the increasing popularity of cell phones in countries without a wireline infrastructure is expected to greatly increase demand for wireless wide area network (WAN) equipment.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com), World Wireless Wide Area Network Markets, reveals that this industry generated revenues of $4.59 billion in 2000 and projects it to increase to $15.62 billion by 2007.

While global Internet use is growing, many countries struggle to provide basic telephone service. With the challenge of laying cable through new territory, providers are relying on wireless network technology to supply a less expensive, easy-to-install alternative to a wireline base.

"The market is still very strong in terms of Internet access connectivity," says Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Wai Sing Lee. "Countries outside North America cannot afford the same wireline infrastructure that North America enjoys. Those same countries are turning to wireless WAN technologies to avoid the cost of installing a wired network yet still furnishing toll quality phone service."

Even in North America, demand for the faster Internet connectivity provided by wireless technology is driving the market. According to Lee, the Internet has simply become an essential tool for many of its users, consequently spurring the need for more and faster access.

"Phone service providers have discovered that cellular phone technology is the most cost-effective way to provide telephone service to a significant proportion of their customer base," says Lee.
