QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces On-Time Sampling of World's First Wireless Megabit Data Rate Integrated Circuit and System Software
SAN DIEGO, July 9, 2001--
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access
(CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the on-time sample shipment of the QUALCOMM CDMA
Technologies (QCT) MSM5500(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) integrated circuit and system
software, as well as the accompanying Subscriber Unit Reference (SURF(TM)) development platform. The
MSM5500 solution supports the industry-adopted 1x Evolution Data Only (1xEV-DO) standard, optimized for
high-speed wireless data, which uses a spectrally efficient 1.25 megahertz (MHz) channel to provide a peak
data rate of 2.4 megabits per second (Mbps) on the forward link.
"The on-time sampling of our MSM5500 integrated circuit, system software and SURF platform underlines
our commitment to provide our customers solutions to meet their aggressive schedules," said Don Schrock,
president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "Our 1xEV-DO solution will give end users the same fast
Internet browsing experience as a high-speed wired connection. Wireless equipment manufacturers and
carriers are already working on products, applications and services that use the capabilities provided by our
1xEV-DO solution."
1xEV-DO provides the lowest cost-per-bit of any announced high-speed wireless technology, including
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Wideband CDMA (WCDMA), while supporting CDMA2000 1x and
offering backward compatibility with existing IS-95A/B systems. The MSM5500 solution provides seamless
inter-operability between CDMA2000 1x and 1xEV-DO systems.
QCT's MSM5500 solution supports the full feature set of the MSM5100(TM) solution, including features
of the Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM) suite of technologies such as gpsOne(TM) position location
capabilities with SnapTrack(TM) technology, Bluetooth(TM) connectivity capabilities, Subscriber Identity
Module (SIM), Removable Universal Identity Module (R-UIM) and multimedia capabilities such as Qtunes(TM)
audio decoders, including support for Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) Layer-3 (MP3), enabling
high-quality music reproduction, and Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) software for MIDI, text and
graphics-based multimedia applications. The MSM5500 device also supports the Binary Runtime Environment
for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) applications platform. The MSM5500 solution is designed to seamlessly
interface with QCT's MSP1000(TM) application processor for terminals requiring MPEG-4 video decoding or
a third-party operating system, or running other processing-intensive applications, such as games. The
MSM5500 solution offers receive diversity for the 1xEV-DO mode to increase data throughput, and is
available in two packages:
1) 0.8 mm 208-ball Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array (FBGA) production
package with operating voltage of 2.5-3.0V. In this package,
the receive diversity is multiplexed on the keypad and liquid
crystal display (LCD) pins, which makes it pin-compatible with
the MSM5100 device to enable rapid development.
2) 0.8 mm 320-pin FBGA package, in which the diversity pins are
dedicated. This package also includes support for Embedded
Trace Macrocell (ETM).
Production quantities of the MSM5500 solution are expected to be available in the third quarter of
calendar 2001.
