Timex and Yahoo! Everywhere Bring the Internet to Your Wrist; The Timex Internet Messenger Watch is Fortified with Yahoo! and Shrinks Both Size and Service Costs
MIDDLEBURY, Conn. and SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2001--As Timex's innovative Internet Messenger arrives in stores, the company is also announcing an agreement with Yahoo! Inc., a leading global Internet communications, commerce and media company, that will make web-to-wrist connectivity a seamless reality for U.S. consumers.
With the Timex Internet Messenger, Timex is the first to market a watch that allows the user to receive Internet e-mail, news, weather reports, sports scores, stock quotes and more, anytime and virtually anyplace in the United States. And now, the Timex Internet Messenger, Fortified with Yahoo!, brings a wealth of Yahoo! content and information right to consumers thanks to Yahoo!(R) Alerts, just about everywhere they go. This quantum leap in wrist instrument technology is made possible by a partnership between Timex, Motorola and SkyTel.
"The Timex Internet Messenger isn't just about bringing a lot of technology to the wrist, it's about delivering real, useful innovations and features that makes everyday life a little easier. Yahoo!'s offerings fit perfectly into that idea," says Jan Mladek, Vice President of Marketing for the product. "Yahoo! adds the best of the Internet to the equation."
Timex Internet Messenger, Fortified with Yahoo!, allows users to tap into the enormous capabilities of one the Web's best-known and most trafficked sites. Timex and Yahoo!, both leaders of their respective industries, have joined together to create a mobile alerts Website for customizing the Timex Internet Messenger experience. This page, accessed by linking from the Internet Messenger home page (http://mobile.timex.com) or logging on to Yahoo! Mobile (http://mobile.yahoo.com), offers enriched content and makes it easier and nearly seamless for Timex Internet Messenger owners to get customized wireless information feeds sent to their watches.
"We are very excited to be working with Timex. The combination of advanced technology and unsurpassed brand recognition that both these companies possess, makes for a very compelling offering," said Sridhar Ranganathan, general manager, Yahoo! Everywhere. "Yahoo! Everywhere is committed to providing expertise to help further innovations like the Timex Internet Messenger watch. This watch is another way for us to continue to deliver essential information to consumers, everywhere they go."
With the Timex Internet Messenger, Fortified with Yahoo!, consumers have instant access to a wealth of timely, personalized information from Yahoo! Alerts, including stock quotes from Yahoo! Finance, breaking stories from Yahoo! News, sports scores from Yahoo! Sports, and more. The Timex Internet Messenger also connects with any of the increasing number of other Web sites that offer mobile alert services. Consumers can opt to receive alerts regarding information such as headline news, auction standings, and flight updates. Additionally, wearers can configure their existing e-mail accounts to forward messages to the timepiece, for anytime, anyplace connectivity.
The same wireless technology that makes web-to-wrist communications possible makes the Timex Internet Messenger watch a full-featured alphanumeric pager. It can receive and store up to 16 Internet e-mail, numeric or word messages. The wearer can choose both the speed and direction of the messages as they scroll across the watch's display. There is also a choice of a silent vibrating alert or several musical chimes for notification when new messages have arrived.
The Timex Internet Messenger is loaded with additional features that today's connected consumers will appreciate. One is FLEXtime, which automatically sets and maintains the precise time and date and adjusts for daylight savings time and time zone changes, freeing the user of ever having to reset the watch.
The Timex Internet Messenger is also an Ironman Triathlon sport watch with 100-hour chronograph with lap split, 8-lap memory recall, 99-lap counter, 100-hour capacity and countdown timer. It also features five settable alarms, dual time zones, 12/24-hour time and Timex's popular Indiglo night-light with Night Mode and All Day Indiglo display.
Due to the latest advancements in miniaturization technology, The Timex Internet Messenger is actually 28% smaller than its predecessor, the Beepwear Pager watch. Unlike some of the bulky, less capable, digital products on the market, the Timex Internet Messenger has a sleek, fashionable profile that fits neatly under the sleeve. For sale now at selected retailers and SkyTel outlets, Timex Internet Messenger watches, available in three styles, can be purchased for around $99.
Wireless services for the Timex Internet Messenger watch are provided exclusively by SkyTel, which offers a vast network of nationwide coverage and affordable rates. Among the several rate plans available, SkyTel will offer 500 word messages, of up to 100 characters each, for only $9.99/month. Timex and SkyTel have made activation and usage simple and easy. Everything necessary to get started is included in the box.
