Wireless Users Will Be Able to Access E-mail From Smartphones
PLANO, Texas and STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Strengthening
their existing relationship, EDS (NYSE: EDS) and Ericsson today announced EDS
will embed Ericsson's mobile devices and software into its advanced mobile
solutions for enterprises and the communications marketplace. As a result,
users of EDS' mobile solutions will be able to access their corporate e-mail
and Personal Information Manager services from their smartphones, as well as
their corporate IT services from their laptops through wireless connections.
"We are enthusiastic about teaming with Ericsson to help organizations
worldwide mobilize business processes in the digital economy," said Reza
Jafari, president of EDS' Global Communications, Entertainment and Media
Industry Group. "This relationship combines Ericsson's market-leading mobile
Internet and infrastructure with EDS' world-class competencies in systems and
business process integration -- to enable full mobile digital workflow that's
available anywhere, anytime."
Preferred Provider of Convergent Technologies
With this agreement, Ericsson joins EDS' preferred providers of mobile
devices combining Internet Protocol and voice capabilities, commonly known as
convergent technologies. This equipment includes the Ericsson R380 Smartphone
-- a mobile phone that also functions as a PDA -- and the latest Ericsson
Bluetooth(TM)-enabled devices providing wireless personal area networking.
EDS will train sales and delivery teams in the provision of solutions based on
these convergent technologies from Ericsson.
In addition to mobile devices, EDS will also integrate software solutions
such as EricssonVirtual Office (EVO) software, which enables mobile users to
access corporate LAN-based systems like e-mail, calendar, contacts and
Intranet.
"EDS is an excellent partner to Ericsson. Both companies have a global
reach and serve companies and governments with cutting-edge products and
services," said Lars E. Svensson, president, Ericsson Enterprise. "When it
comes to mobility, Ericsson and EDS have a very complementary client base, and
Ericsson is very pleased at entering this partnership as strategic supplier of
products to EDS' mobile services targeted towards the Global 1000."
Large companies worldwide today face the challenge of managing complex
communications and business processes, while keeping up with the rapidly
changing mobile technologies. By joining forces, Ericsson and EDS will
provide companies with mobility solutions that offer the latest, cutting-edge
mobile equipment and software linking voice and data -- combined with
electronic application distribution, enterprise-wide synchronization and
integration.
According to market research firm Gartner, the global market for these
advanced mobility services will exceed $3 billion by 2004.
