AlterEgo Delivers Designer Extension to Create Mobile Web Content With Macromedia Dreamweaver and Dreamweaver UltraDev

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- AlterEgo, the leading provider of enterprise software and services for building the pervasive e-business, today announced the availability of the AlterEgo Designer(TM) Extension for Macromedia Dreamweaver and Dreamweaver UltraDev. The AlterEgo Designer Extension provides Web developers with an integrated toolset for designing mobile Web content and extending existing Internet content to mobile devices. AlterEgo and Macromedia joined forces last fall to develop a best-of-breed solution that enables developers to create content once for delivery to any device, regardless of carrier or protocol.

The integration of AlterEgo Designer extends the authoring capabilities of Macromedia Dreamweaver and Dreamweaver UltraDev from the desktop to any browser-enabled Internet access device, including PDAs, cell phones, pagers, and information appliances. Macromedia has more than one million developers worldwide using these products to design and develop dynamic content and Web applications. This integration ensures that content and applications authored by Dreamweaver and Dreamweaver UltraDev will be compatible with all wireless devices, regardless of their individual characteristics and idiosyncrasies. Macromedia developers can now develop mobile applications without any knowledge of WML, HDML, Palm HTML, cHTML, or any of the myriad mobile markup languages.

"As demand for companies to provide wireless Internet content and services grows, it becomes increasingly important to integrate technologies that can extend existing, or create new, Internet content for both wired and wireless devices," said Richard Ling, president and CEO of AlterEgo. "Macromedia products have high penetration into the Web designer and developer market. The AlterEgo Designer Extension will provide Macromedia customers with a simple way to design once for all devices, carriers and protocols."

"Macromedia is dedicated to providing Web designers and developers with solutions to build usable, dynamic Web content and applications," said Tony Campitelli, vice president of product marketing, Macromedia. "The AlterEgo Designer Extension allows developers to use their existing expertise with our products to deliver mobile content. By combining the AlterEgo Designer Extension with the Dreamweaver platform, Web teams will be able to seamlessly add mobile support into their existing content workflow."

AlterEgo Designer provides a simple GUI drag-and-drop interface that enables Web designers to quickly create and adapt HTML and XML content for the best user experience on any wired or wireless device without any modifications to existing Web content or applications. Using the AlterEgo Designer Extension, site designers can create XSLT rulesheets that optimize the navigation, layout and user environment for any type of device used to access the Internet. Through the use of simulators for real-time debugging and the power of "wildcard abstraction," a typical mobile development cycle for a Web site of hundreds of thousand pages can be reduced to just weeks or even days.

AlterEgo's Designer product also incorporates Microdesign-a practice of building services and content optimized explicitly for tiny mobile devices. In a November 2000 report, Forrester Research noted, "companies must unlearn the Web's rules and master a new competency (called) Microdesign." From its inception, AlterEgo has believed that Microdesign capabilities would be central to its success and hired Microdesign expert Dr. Mike Mills as its Chief Interface Technologist. Mills spearheaded the development of "wizards" added to the Designer tool that help designers create applications and content for constrained environments. Specifically, these "wizards" incorporate Microdesign elements to address navigation, user orientation, intuitive communication and the interrelation of users and their devices to provide an overall rich and meaningful user experience.
