Novatel Wireless First To Receive North American GSM Congress Certification for Merlin G100 GSM/GPRS 1900 PCMCIA Card
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 2001-- Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVTL), a provider of wireless data access solutions, today announced certification by
the PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board) for the Merlin G100(TM) GPRS (General Packet Radio Services)
1900 Wireless PC Card Modem. With GPRS coverage, the Merlin G100 will provide data connectivity at speeds of up to
53.6 kbps for an always-on wireless connection. GPRS coverage is expected to be available from GSM service providers
in North America in the third quarter of this year.
"Earlier in the year, Novatel Wireless achieved industry milestones with the G100 by being the first to receive FCC and
Industry Canada Certification for use on the GPRS network, " said John Major, CEO of Novatel Wireless. "These
achievements are a testament to the strength of our core IP and R&D effort."
The PTCRB represents the North American GSM carriers and is the standard for PCS testing and certification
equivalent to the European GSM/DCS standard. The PTCRB provides the framework for GSM Mobile Equipment (ME)
Type Certification. This includes, but is not limited to, determination of the test specifications and methods to implement
the Type Certification process for GSM Mobile Equipment. The group is also responsible for generating input regarding
testing of Mobile Stations to standards development organizations.
Slightly larger than a credit card, the Merlin G100 is a powerful addition to the Merlin Family of Wireless PC Card
Modems, providing access to email, corporate databases and the Internet at speeds up to 53.6 kbps in GPRS coverage
areas, and circuit-switched data to 14.4 kbps in GSM coverage areas.
About GSM/GPRS
GPRS is an exciting new wireless technology standard which will profoundly alter and improve the data services that
can be added to GSM-based personal communications services networks. An over-the-air system for transmitting data
on GSM networks, GPRS technology converts data into standard Internet packets, enabling interoperability between the
Internet and the GSM network. GSM service providers in North America, Europe and Asia are aggressively enhancing
their service capabilities through the support of GPRS for packet data.
GPRS wireless technology employs extensive authentication and encryption via standard GSM algorithms, making it
one of the most secure public wireless systems in the world. The Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM card), a component of
the GSM network, stores the authentication and encryption algorithms, making it virtually impossible for unauthorized
users to capture and decipher messages.
