Dealing With Wireless Data's Dark Side: Roaming Charges
URL(s): WISP
CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 2001--The wireless data revolution offers spectacular efficiencies for
business, but it also can mean spectacular costs. When you use a cell phone, you pay by the minute. When you download
data, you pay by the kilobyte. Downloading a simple spreadsheet outside of your carrier's service area can easily cost
$16 in roaming charges. Companies are finding that their road warriors are now running up thousands of dollars in
roaming charges each month.
WISP Incorporated of Cleveland saw the need to put cost control back in the hands of the consumer. Its newly released
WISP NOMAD(TM) is a tool to control roaming costs for both companies and individuals. "Wireless data services, such
as those offered by GoAmerica and OmniSky, are fabulous products," said Mark Fagerholm, WISP's chief financial
officer. "They can dramatically increase productivity for salespeople, reporters, consultants and others who spend their
lives in hotel suites, airports and rental cars because they provide instant access to critical information and
communications throughout the nation. The cost, however, can be staggering. Many IT managers and my fellow CFOs are
shocked to find that a single traveling employee can rack up $1,000 per day in roaming costs."
WISP NOMAD(TM) solves that problem by recognizing the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) carriers that are
available and automatically selects the appropriate carrier to eliminate roaming charges. If the user has contracts with
more than one CDPD carrier, it chooses the one with the strongest signal in order to provide the best connection. WISP
NOMAD(TM) comes to consumers as a CD that is easily used to program Sierra Wireless Aircard(TM) devices in
laptops. The user then selects his or her preferred CDPD service providers.
On the road, WISP NOMAD(TM) makes sure that only the selected CDPD carriers are used. If not available, the
transmission is not completed at that location. This enables travelers to maintain nationwide connectivity at a fixed cost.
WISP offers WISP NOMAD(TM) software to corporations, individuals and ISP providers. A significant benefit for
businesses is the real-time management tools incorporated into WISP NOMAD(TM). For example, managers can track
roaming and the amount of data use as it occurs -- not two months later when the bill for roaming arrives.
WISP has been awarded a provisional patent for the WISP NOMAD(TM) technology. Additional information about
WISP NOMAD(TM) can be found in the "Products" section of the WISP web site: www.wispinc.com.
