Wireless Generation Showcases Handheld Assessment Software in Senate Hearing on Education Technology
WASHINGTON, D.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 2001--Wireless Generation, the leading developer of mobile K-12 educational applications, today announced that it has been asked to
participate in a hearing on education technology held by the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations
Subcommittee of the U.S. Senate. Chaired by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), the Subcommittee will discuss what educators have
learned about the best way to use technology in schools, and how the federal government can help foster those effective uses.
The hearing will be held today at 9:30 A.M. in Room 106 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
The hearing convened by Senator Harkin brings together expert witnesses from educational institutions and leading educational
technology vendors to help the committee understand the challenges and opportunities associated with the use of technology in
the classroom. "The hearing reflects the growing national search for breakthrough technologies that make a real difference in
schools. We believe that Wireless Generation's innovative tools for capturing rich student performance data right at the point of
instruction represent just such a breakthrough, and we are grateful for this occasion to share our vision with the leaders who
shape educational technology policy," said Larry Berger, CEO of Wireless Generation.
Wireless Generation will demonstrate its flagship product, a mobile software application offering a new way for teachers to
perform early reading assessment and then use the findings to customize instruction for each student's needs. Based on
well-established early reading methodologies already in widespread use, the system allows teachers to capture real-time student
performance data on a handheld device such as a PalmPilot, then automatically performs the number-crunching that has
traditionally taken teachers as much as an hour or two per day to complete. A simple-to-use, Web-based interface enables
teachers and administrators to analyze, interpret, track, and report the progress of individual students, classes, or the entire
school district in real-time. By streamlining and automating the time-consuming paper-based assessment methods currently in
use, Wireless Generation frees teachers to focus on thinking diagnostically about student data and developing targeted,
individualized instruction.
Said Senator Harkin, "Technology will play an increasingly important role in our nation's classrooms as we strive to improve the
effectiveness of our educational system. Companies such as Wireless Generation are leading the way in developing the tools our
teachers, schools, and communities need to provide the best possible instruction for our children." Other leading educational
technology companies participating in today's hearing include Microsoft, Apple/Powerschool, Plato Learning, Carnegie Learning,
WGBH, Breakthrough to Literacy, and Lightspan.

paper-based bookkeeping tasks, Wireless Generation helps teachers provide targeted, individualized instruction; administrators
