Lucent Technologies to Provide 3G Wireless Systems and Professional Services to MetroPCS

URL(s): Lucent  MetroPCS

DALLAS and MURRAY HILL, N.J., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- MetroPCS and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced a three-year, $161 million contract for Lucent to provide third-generation (3G) wireless systems and related professional services to MetroPCS, which plans to be a provider of wireless services in major metropolitan areas of the U.S.

Under terms of the all-cash agreement, which does not include vendor financing, Lucent will install an all-digital wireless network based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology in MetroPCS' 14 wireless markets, including Atlanta, San Francisco, Sacramento, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.

The deployment of the network will include products from Lucent's 3G Flexent(TM) family of mobile switching centers and base stations, which support the CDMA2000 3G standard. Lucent also will provide installation, enhanced program management and network design services through its Lucent Worldwide Services organization.

"With Lucent's help, we plan to introduce our competitive wireless services early next year," said Roger Linquist, president and chief executive officer of MetroPCS. "We anticipate our services will be attractive to the unserved and underserved portions of the wireless voice market."

Lucent will install equipment with CDMA2000 technology capabilities. CDMA2000 1X is based on the internationally adopted CDMA2000 standard of the International Telecommunications Union, an arm of the United Nations, and enables today's CDMA to support more users and improve data performance.

"Our expertise in CDMA, our ability to quickly roll out greenfield networks and our 3G equipment will promptly put MetroPCS in the position to offer competitive voice services with an eye on high-speed 3G data services in the future, without the need for new spectrum," said Bob Bellion, vice president of sales for Lucent.
