SEATTLE, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- 4thpass, Inc. today announced Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Nextel Ventures, the venture capital unit of Nextel Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTL) have invested in the Seattle-based company.

The Motorola investment was led by Motorola Ventures, the strategic venture capital arm of the global communications company. 4thpass raised a total of eight million dollars in its first round of funding.

4thpass (www.4thpass.com) builds and markets technology that efficiently delivers and manages the latest applications on the next generation of Java-compliant mobile devices.

"This investment from Nextel and Motorola lends credibility to what we have always believed -- that our technology will have an impact on the next-generation of mobile devices," said 4thpass CEO Mazin Ramadan. Motorola and Nextel are the first companies in North America to offer Java-enabled wireless phones.

With 4thpass' Mobile Application System(TM) (MAS(TM)), applications offered by carriers can be downloaded and installed wirelessly. The 4thpass technology provides telecom companies with new ways to generate revenue and cut costs for managing wireless Java services.

Nextel was first to market, and is still the only provider of Java-enabled wireless phones in the U.S. These phones are manufactured by Motorola and support both Java 2 Micro Edition(TM) (J2ME(TM)) and the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

"We believe Motorola's Java-enabled handsets, with the 4thpass complete wireless management system and Nextel service, will continue to change the way people communicate by providing users with enhanced content, personalization and easy device upgrades," said Jim O'Connor, Managing Director, Motorola Ventures - Chicago. "Motorola's collaboration with 4thpass reflects our mission to provide consumers with the richest and most up-to-date functionality."

"4thpass is an innovator in helping to bring Java applications from carriers to business and consumer customers," said Tom Kelly, executive vice president and chief marketing officer and strategic planning at Nextel. "This investment reflects Nextel's commitment to advance the infrastructure needed to support rapid development, deployment and adoption of Java applications as well as provide a more robust management environment for Java-enabled wireless applications."
