Telcontar's New Drill Down Server Offers Customers the Premier Software Platform for Location-Based Services

SAN JOSE, Calif. - August 14, 2001 - Offering customers the very best in scalability and product features, Telcontar today announced the launch of the new version of its Drill Down Server, the premier software platform for location-based services. The Drill Down Server (DDS) 2.1's new features include support for real-time traffic information, multiple address query matching capabilities, an enhanced map image interface, as well as improved matching of street names, intersections, and addresses in different map databases. The product enables a variety of location-based applications including those for cell phones, call centers, workstations, Internet browsers, PDAs, and in-vehicle telematics units.

"This product launch represents a milestone for the company in terms of its powerful functionality and product quality," said Eric Carlson, president and CEO of Telcontar. "Telcontar has listened carefully to our customer's needs and we're confident that new features in the Drill Down Server 2.1 are set to meet them."

The DDS is data density independent and can rapidly query and process multiple layers and types of spatial information. As a result, it can locate the nearest common objects (e.g. the nearest fast-food franchise) as quickly as a rare item (e.g. a five-star restaurant). In addition, the DDS is map database independent so multiple sources of data covering the same geographic area can be used to provide "best-of-breed" support. These features will enable application developers to obtain optimal coverage of geography, population and points-of-interest.

The DDS provides fast, powerful, and flexible access to maps and other and associated spatial data. Some of the applications the DDS enables include:
  • "Where is my.?" Commercial and personal fleet tracking
  • "How do I get there?" Trip planning, navigation, real-time traffic information, and guidance
  • "Help!" Emergency roadside assistance
  • "Where is the nearest.?" Concierge and directory services

The DDS is currently available for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows NT with support for Sun Solaris, Linux, and Free BSD coming soon. Standard map databases include DMTI Spatial, ESRI, GDT, NavTech, TeleAtlas North America and Europe, and TIGER.

About Telcontar Telcontar is the provider of the premier software platform for location-based services. Telcontar's clients use its Drill Down Server to offer their own customers such services as driving directions, real-time traffic information, and maps. The company's services are also used by vehicular or personal emergency response call centers as well as for fleet tracking and dispatch. The company specializes in integrating digital maps with traditional database content drawn from multiple sources. Telcontar is privately held and headquartered in San Jose, California with field offices in Los Angeles, Dallas, and the United Kingdom.
