CommWorks and Lucent Technologies Demonstrate Interoperability of 3G Wireless Products

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill., Aug. 15, 2001-- Lab Testing Validates Interoperability of "Always On" Mobile Internet Connections

CommWorks Corporation, a leader in wireless data networking technology, today announced it has concluded successful interoperability testing of its products for standards-based third-generation (3G) high-speed wireless networks with Lucent Technologies. By delivering 3G wireless network products that interoperate and adhere to industry standards, CommWorks and Lucent offer service providers a ready-made option for introducing an "always on" mobile Internet connection to mobile devices.

The testing centered on CDMA2000 networks, an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) approved 3G standard. This technology enables the evolution of cdmaOne(TM) service providers, as well as other carriers, to deliver 3G Mobile IP data services to subscribers at peak data rates of up to 144 kilobits per second (Kbps) in high mobility applications, using existing spectrum. This increase in data rates will open up a new generation of applications to wireless subscribers. The higher speed networks allow service providers to evolve wireless data offerings from today's text format to content and applications with more graphics, color and other multi-media features. Wireless operators also benefit from the increased voice capacity and extended battery life of subscriber units afforded by CDMA2000 networks.

"CommWorks is committed to delivering to the global marketplace a standards-compliant, cost-effective migration path to 3G networks," said Irfan Ali, president, CommWorks Corporation. "Through our efforts with Lucent, we have developed groundbreaking new technologies and products for the circuit-switched and packet-switched wireless networking environments. By extending our collaboration into the 3G arena, we are delivering solutions that give wireless operators the tools they need to offer their subscribers new, advanced applications."

The Architecture of a 3G Network

The CDMA2000 standard is the next phase in the evolution of cdmaOne digital cellular and PCS networks to 3G networks. Based on the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) standard, cdmaOne networks today provide coverage in more than 40 countries and boast more than 90 million subscribers around the world. (Source: CDMA Development Group, June 4, 2001).

In a CDMA2000 network, base stations from manufacturers like Lucent connect via a Radio Access Network (RAN) Packet Control Function (PCF) to a Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN), which performs traffic aggregation, similar to that handled by Packet Switches and IP Routers. The PDSN uses Authentication, Accounting and Administration (AAA) servers for user authentication and traffic management, then forwards traffic to a gateway router/home agent (GR/HA) at the designated IP network.

CommWorks supplies the core data infrastructure to enable high-speed wireless data calls. The Lucent PCF separates the IP data transmission and connects to CommWorks' core data infrastructure, which then forwards the data traffic directly into the Internet, while voice calls continue through the mobile switching center. CommWorks offers key packet data-services for CDMA2000 mobile subscribers, including quick, authenticated Internet access using Simple IP services; and fast, secure access to home or private networks using Mobile IP services. These services create the necessary data conduit for delivering enhanced revenue-generating applications.

The interoperability testing involved Lucent Flexent(TM) CDMA network equipment and CommWorks' high-speed data networking solution. CommWorks products involved in the testing included the:

-- Total Control(R) 1000 PDSN, the point of entry into the wireless packet data network for mobile subscribers;

-- Total Control 1000 Home Agent, which terminates Mobile IP tunnels and serves as the anchor point for Mobile IP subscribers;

-- CommWorks(R)4301 Home Agent Control Node, which manages multiple home agents;

-- CommWorks 4302 Foreign Agent Control Node, which manages multiple PDSNs in a 3G wireless network; and

-- CommWorks AAA solution from Funk Software, the Steel-Belted RADIUS Advanced Wireless Edition, the conduit for subscriber authentication, user service permissions and call accounting information.
