OpenTV Delivers Chat and SMS Services Over Interactive TV

URL(s): OpenTV

AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 2001-- OpenTV (Nasdaq:OPTV) and (Euronext Amsterdam:OPTV), the world's leading interactive television company, today announced the launch of OpenTV Short Message Service (SMS) and OpenTV Chat communications applications.

Both applications enable operators to generate new revenues through interactive services. Part of OpenTV's continued effort to develop the future of interactive television, the new products demonstrate Open TV's ability to lead the interactive TV industry in both middleware and applications.

OpenTV SMS addresses the worldwide boom in mobile phone text messaging by allowing users to send short text messages from their TV to any mobile phone in their region that is SMS-capable. Based on a pay per use model, operators can use the application to create additional revenue streams by charging for each SMS message sent at premium call rates and through banner advertising. The SMS service also enables broadcasters to send pre-set messages linked to television programs. For example, messages can be set to contain latest sports results, news headlines or times of favourite TV shows.

OpenTV Chat enhances the TV experience by enabling viewers to share opinions in dialogue boxes displayed on their TV, allowing them to take a much more active part in watching programs such as sporting events, soap operas and reality TV shows. Network operators can choose to connect TV based dialogue to Internet chat-room environments. Network operators are able to establish new revenues with OpenTV Chat through banner advertising and by charging participants premium rate call charges per usage.

James Ackerman, OpenTV CEO, said, "These applications show Open TV's commitment to providing the complete interactive television solution. Both enable operators to launch highly compelling interactive TV communications services quickly and easily. OpenTV has unparalleled global experience in helping operators to use the latest interactive TV applications to gain and retain viewers while generating new revenues."
