The Strategis Group Predicts Wireless Location Services Will Drive European Wireless Value-Added Growth
URL(s): Strategis Group
LONDON, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Increasing demand for value-added
wireless services will drive market growth in the European wireless sector
through 2007. Further, carriers will realize high returns from infrastructure
upgrades to support these additional applications.
The Strategis Group study, "European Wireless Location Services: Enabling
The Mobile Internet," analyzes the development of the wireless location
services (WLS) market within the top 14 European markets. The report includes
detailed forecasts of WLS-addressable market and equipment revenues (see Table
below), annual revenues by type of service and the number of wireless location
requests. The report features interviews conducted with 45 companies that
will dominate these markets.
Despite a downturn in the telecommunications economy, mobile operators
have the opportunity to grow revenue streams if they successfully mine
consumer interest for non-voice applications. "Operators who are able to
differentiate the mobile end-user experience from the fixed on-line experience
and who proactively communicate a differentiated message likely will succeed
in communicating a value proposition to consumers", stated Jake Saunders,
European Director of The Strategis Group.
Aggregate WLS Revenue and Infrastructure Upgrade Expenditures
(In Millions USD)
Year 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007
WLS Revenues 500.4 1,408.7 2,320.9 3,581.3 5,433.7 7,942.6 1,507.9
Upgrade
Expenditures 52.4 140.0 469.2 548.1 731.7 930.4 1,137.3
"The value chain needed to develop a successful wireless location service
sector is coalescing rapidly, but there still is a lot to resolve. Key issues
include privacy, security, roaming and technical integration," added Saunders.
"As a result, the value chain still is in a state of flux, with every member
of the chain believing they are the key component. This is leading to
confusion over effective business models. With no proved business model,
operators have been hesitant to deploy new services and equipment. Operators
should not take too conservative of an approach by only launching one or two
services, but instead they should try to launch as many services to as many
different consumer segments as possible. By doing this, operators will build
stronger interest from users as well as invaluable experiences for future
service offerings."
