New edition of Nokia's top rated Mobile Internet Toolkit supports XHTML and CSS to speed development of next-generation applications
URL(s): Forum Nokia
September 17, 2001) -- Nokia today introduced a new version of the Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit 3.0 for application developers. The new toolkit provides
developers with a realistic, PC-based testing and simulation environment for creating XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup
Language) with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and WAP applications. The new Nokia toolkit is available at Forum Nokia's
website free of charge.
XHTML is the language used by current developers for Internet services delivered to PCs, thus extending XHTML to wireless
devices will make it fundamentally easier to develop applications for the mobile Intenet.
The Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit is fully compliant with the June 2000 WAP Forum specification. It supports the markup
language standard for the mobile Internet, XHTML, as well as CSS.
"XHTML represents the future of mobile computing. By working in an accepted industry standard, developers can create content
once and then offer that product to a growing universe of XHTML compatible devices," said Jouko Häyrynen, Vice President,
Forum Nokia. "With the Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit 3.0, mobile application developers can easily create complete applications
with familiar tools and without a handset or access to carrier infrastructure. With XHTML and CSS, mobile applications will look
better and will be easier to use and Nokia is the first company to provide tools to enable developers to take advantage of this
technology."
The new toolkit includes a range of simulators that enable the prototyping of XHTML-based and WAP services as they would
appear on actual commercially available services. Two of these simulators are reference implementations. The June 2000 WAP
ForumTM specification reference implementation simulator allows for the development and testing of all WAP applications
against the latest approved WAP Forum specification. The simulator for XHTML browser implementation enables the prototyping
of next generation mobile services that will be supported in future handsets. The testing of applications is made easier by the
completely adjustable display size of both simulators.
Several Nokia handset simulators are also available for use with the Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit 3.0. The toolkit has been
designed so that these emulators can be downloaded separately from the development environment and new emulators plugged
in as they become available.
The Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit 3.0 has an updated, flexible user interface that provides developers with improved editors,
better views and expanded preferences. Support for WIM (Wireless Identity Module), Push, and location services is standard.
The new toolkit is the successor to the Nokia SDK that was ranked earlier this year as the SDK wireless application developers
used most often according to the independent research firm Evans Data. In addition, the predecessor toolkit was recognized as
the "SDK of the Year" at the Wireless Developer Conference in August and was singled out as "the most functional and versatile
software development kit".
Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit is available for download at www.forum.nokia.com and www.americas.forum.nokia.com.
