URL(s): TDK  Intermec

EVERETT, Wash.--Sept. 17, 2001-- Allows Manufacturers to Quickly Offer Enterprises 802.11a Strength and Speed

TDK Corp. and Intermec Technologies Corp. have formed a joint marketing initiative that will offer OEM manufacturers immediate access to wireless network technology based on the now-emerging 802.11a wireless standard.
The 802.11a technology, which succeeds the earlier 802.11b standard, provides significantly greater speed and enhanced security features for enterprise wireless communication networks.
TDK, one of the world's leading suppliers of technology components, and Intermec, a pioneer in wireless communications throughout industry enterprises, are joining forces to offer OEM manufacturers TDK PC client cards teamed with the new 2106 access point from Intermec. The 2106 access point is based on 802.11a wireless technology.
The client card/access point technology package, which has been jointly engineered, ensures and guarantees interoperability, said Winston Guillory, Intermec vice president of Channel Partner Sales and Worldwide OEM Operations.
The package uses the industry-leading 802.11a chip set developed by Atheros Corp. Both TDK and Intermec are Atheros launch partners.
"These types of collaborations don't come along often," Guillory said. "The Atheros 802.11a technology in an Intermec access point, paired with TDK's client card -- all engineered to work seamlessly together -- allows manufacturers to rapidly offer products that feature the speed and security of an 802.11a wireless system."
"Companies around the world have been waiting for the reality of 802.11a," said Dr. Akira Okamoto, director of TDK's Telecom Technology Development Center. "This partnership allows us to provide the benefits of this new technology wrapped around the experience and tested expertise of TDK and Intermec. Our combined years of experience mean OEM partners can confidently take advantage of this package's capabilities when designing new products."
The much-anticipated 802.11a higher-speed wireless standard promises to open new markets to the wireless segment, including the enterprise and small office/home office, with its ability to handle even the most demanding and bandwidth-heavy applications seamlessly and securely.
