International FiberCom Assists With Rebuild of Telecom Infrastructure in New York City
PHOENIX, Sept. 18, 2001--International FiberCom Inc. (Nasdaq:IFCI), a leading provider of a full range of services to
telecommunications, cable and wireless service providers, today announced that its New Jersey-based Wireless Technologies Division has been working
with a few major telecommunications companies over the last week to restore telephone and radio coverage in lower Manhattan by installing
rooftop-to-rooftop infrared links to replace damaged underground telephone lines.
The infrared links on rooftops of nearby buildings provide wireless high-speed data and voice transmission across distances up to one mile and were
deployed within a few hours.
The Wireless Technologies Division has also helped to reconfigure one nationwide wireless carrier's system to provide cellular coverage to the devastated
lower Manhattan area. Since much of the cellular network equipment that serviced this area was located in and around the World Trade Center itself, the
division added infrared links to the existing equipment to make redeployment across the Hudson River viable.
In addition, the division restored lost interconnections between sites for the Port Authority's emergency radio systems using an infrared link to connect
two Port Authority buildings in New Jersey.
The Wireless Technologies Division has developed the innovative technology that has been used to put telecom capacity quickly into place and originally
used it to make signals available in tunnels crossing the Hudson River. Now the same technology is being used to help businesses and government agencies
communicate with each other from Ground Zero and from other affected points.
International FiberCom Chairman and CEO Joseph P. Kealy commented: "We mobilized as quickly as we could get our people in place and are gratified
that the technologies we have developed are so helpful at this time of terrible need. In times of crisis where damage has occurred to wired
telecommunications networks, the need for cellular services is heightened and is often the only way to communicate.
"Our ability to provide both wired and wireless solutions sets us apart from others in that we are able to provide wired or wireless solutions or a
combination of both."
"They say that adversity brings out the best in people and we believe that the emergency response in New York City has been a tremendous
demonstration of the strength and determination of the American people," Kealy continued.
"We are thankful to be able to help and are more than happy that the technologies we have are making it easier to resume business and communications
in the devastated area. Since our top priority has been to respond quickly and effectively to the many requests for help we received during this emergency, it
will take some time to determine the revenue value of what we have or may be asked to provide."
