Insignia's Jeode PDA Edition To Be Included With Intel XScale Microarchitecture Reference Platform

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 24, 2001--Insignia Solutions(R) (Nasdaq:INSG), the leading provider of accelerated Java(TM)
software solutions for information appliances, announced today that it will work with Intel Corporation to optimize Insignia's Jeode(TM) virtual machine
technologies for the Intel(R) XScale(TM) microarchitecture reference platform.
The Intel XScale reference platform, which will include the recently introduced Jeode PDA Edition, is
a tool to enable developers and OEMs to
rapidly bring to market a variety of wireless and handheld applications, as well as portable information appliances. Insignia is a member of Intel's PCA
Developer Network.
"Java technology is becoming a significant element in many of the devices for which our Intel Xscale-based application processors are designed," said
Mark Casey, director of marketing for Intel's Handheld Computing Division. "Digital phones, personal digital assistants, communicators, web tablets
and other types of information appliances that require a Java runtime environment are able to take full advantage of the high performance of Intel XScale
technology. The combination of Intel XScale and Jeode technologies accelerates Java applications without adding dedicated Java hardware -- enabling
lower power and higher system performance."
"The Intel XScale microarchitecture addresses requirements, such as battery life and system performance, that complement Jeode technology," said
Ron Workman, senior vice president of marketing for Insignia Solutions. "We're excited to be working with Intel to optimize Jeode technology for the
XScale microarchitecture and pleased that Intel will include our patent-pending technology as part of their reference implementation."
Jeode Platform
The Jeode(TM) platform enables accelerated and robust Java(TM) functionality on information appliances. A "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine" fully
compatible with the PersonalJava(TM) and EmbeddedJava(TM) specifications, the Jeode EVM(TM) can execute Java applications 6-10 times faster
than interpretive JVMs in roughly the same amount of memory.
Key attributes include:
--
Industry leading accelerated performance and efficient memory utilization through patent-pending dynamic adaptive compilation (DAC(TM)) and
precise, concurrent garbage collection technologies
--
Configurability and tunability to meet the diverse needs of information appliance developers
--
A turn-key software solution already ported and tested on popular RTOS/ microprocessor combinations:
--
Operating systems include Windows CE, Windows NT4, VxWorks, Linux, ITRON, Nucleus, BSDI Unix and pSOS
--
Microprocessors include MIPS, ARM, Intel x86, PowerPC and Hitachi SH-3 and SH-4
