Panasonic, the leading provider of ruggedized notebook PCs, today announced the release of a unique ruggedized portable
computer, the Toughbook(R) 01 Handheld terminal, the newest portable computer solution for today's mobile professional.
The Toughbook 01 will offer users a compact, yet durable and expandable hardware solution designed for today's enterprise
and the stringent demands of vertical industries. The addition of this device rounds out Panasonic's robust product line that
provides ruggedized, innovative portable data processing solutions covering the complete spectrum of portable computing form
factors.
The Toughbook 01 represents the sixth generation of ruggedized portable computing hardware from Panasonic. This rich
history is exemplified in a device that has been designed to provide reliability through ruggedization. "The data entry inputting
approach of the Toughbook 01 is further evidence of PCSC's commitment to solution based products, comments Rance
Poehler, President of Panasonic Computer Solutions Company. "The Toughbook 01 is one of the first ruggedized handheld
devices today that offers either keyboard or touchscreen data entry. Our research indicates that this flexibility will greatly
enhance the user's ability to continue to work in environments or situations where being limited to one type of inputting
ultimately hinders productivity," further notes Poehler.
Development of the Toughbook 01, as all Panasonic's Toughbooks, was driven by PCSC customer demand and insights.
The initial deployment of the Toughbook 01, which has been in development for the past year, is scheduled to commence in
the fourth quarter of 2001 with various Public Safety agencies, Federal government, and field service applications in vertical
markets.
"Taking advantage of the rich functionality found in Microsoft's(R) Windows(R) CE 3.0, Panasonic is delivering a
ruggedized PDA that offers a reliable mobile solution that can seamlessly be integrated into existing IT infrastructures," said
Keith White, Senior Director of Marketing for Embedded Alliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corporation.
Ruggedization By The Industry Innovator and Leader
The Toughbook 01 is the beneficiary of more than ten years of research and development in the field of ruggedization.
Panasonic's Toughbook 01 was designed to comply with MIL STD 810 E environmental test procedures for drop shock and
moisture resistance. Additionally, port and connector covers are sealed and the case is scratch resistant.
Integrated Wireless & GPS Options
In addition to integrated, internally powered support for the most popular nationwide wide area wireless communications
solutions used today including; DataTAC (Motient Network), Mobitex (Cingular Interactive), and CDPD, Panasonic's
Toughbook 01 is GPS ready for maximum mobility, ease-of-operation and user productivity in geographic data collection and
mapping applications.
