Columbitech Announces Commercial Launch of Wireless VPN

URL(s): www.columbitech.com

STOCKHOLM - October 1, 2001 - Columbitech, a provider of secure wireless data solutions, has released a commercial version of its Columbitech Wireless VPN, compatible with Windows 2000. The technology enables the mobile staff of enterprises to access their corporate data through a secure VPN tunnel over a wireless IP network, while enjoying the convenience of an always-on connection. Building on the proven success of Columbitech's beta software version, as well as recent global interoperability demonstrations supporting GPRS, CDPD, WCDMA, Bluetooth, and Wireless LAN, Columbitech Wireless VPN is now available worldwide. A version for Pocket PC for HTTP traffic is also available today, and a wireless VPN trial version for Pocket PC will be released in December to be followed by a commercial version in January.

Convenience - Handling Wireless Coverage Frustrations

Columbitech's technology offers value for the corporate user by making the wireless experience a viable and reliable business tool. It bypasses common user frustrations associated with wireless data communication, such as download interruption and having to re-login every time the signal fails and the secure session is lost. The Session Resume technology maintains the same session and VPN tunnel even when the wireless signal fades out, eliminating the need to re-login into another VPN tunnel, which is sometimes the case with traditional IPSec VPNs. Another feature, Transaction Recovery enables the wireless device to pick up an interrupted download right where it left before interruption.

"In the past, companies could realize the productivity benefits of the computing world only when their staff were at their desks, sitting at their computers. However, today's pace of business keeps employees on the move, but they still need access to critical data. Columbitech Wireless VPN provides a complete security solution for companies to transfer that productivity benefit to their mobile workforce," said Pontus Bergdahl, Columbitech CEO. "The Session Resume feature, which maintains an uninterrupted wireless experience, will ensure that workers will actually trust their wireless connection with their sensitive information."

High Performance and Security for the Working Wireless Community

Columbitech leverages today's technology to give today's mobile professional a speedy, cost efficient, and secure communications experience. Columbitech Wireless VPN can reduce data size by up to 50 percent, creating the perception of higher speed and increasing productivity in the bandwidth-poor environment of wireless networks. The benefit of this performance enhancement is immediately quantifiable when a service provider's fee is based on a metered plan - as the total quantity of data goes down, so does the cost.

Security is a critical factor for enterprises in deploying technology. Columbitech Wireless VPN software supports digital certificates and has end-to-end security to prevent both external and internal hacking of sensitive corporate data. The Columbitech Wireless VPN employs WTLS, instead of IPSec. Columbitech chose the WTLS standard because it was designed specifically for the mobile environment, and is a key element in the Session Resume feature. Furthermore, the software is easy to install and it closes up critical security loopholes that top the list of concerns of IT departments.

According to Tim Scannell, an analyst with Mobile Insights, Inc., these features are highly relevant to the enterprise customer. "The inherent security and access speeds offered by Columbitech's Wireless VPN is a plus for enterprise customers looking to extend mission critical information out to a mobile work force," said Scannell.

Designed for Today's and Tomorrow's Wireless Networks

The version of the technology shipping today has built into it the ability to seamlessly roam between multiple wireless IP networks, as long as the user has appropriate subscriptions. Columbitech Wireless VPN allows a mobile professional to enjoy higher than 3G-bandwidth when in a Wireless LAN hotspot and offers the user mobility to travel into a larger area with CDPD bandwidth - again without having to log off and on. Building such functionality into Columbitech Wireless VPN from the very first product ensures that enterprises will not be forced to upgrade when they decide to take advantage of newer wireless networks as they come online. "Seamless roaming between wireless systems and technologies is key to the success of an 'always on and always available' wireless network," observed Scannell.

Announcements for the Windows 2000-compatible Columbitech Wireless VPN will be featured on Columbitech's Web site, www.columbitech.com. Future product plans include a Pocket PC-compatible Columbitech Wireless VPN.
