BOSTON, Oct. 2, 2001--In a new research report, Aberdeen Group, a leading provider of technology market consulting and research, states that the personal digital assistant (PDA) market will reach $6.6 billion by 2005 with approximately 39 million units shipped. This research is a product of Aberdeen's Information Appliances practice, which covers emerging and established suppliers of mobile handheld devices while analyzing marketing, technology, and business trends.

"Although PDAs have enjoyed great success in the consumer market to date, enterprise purchases will be the chief driver of growth moving forward," says report author Isaac Ro. "To that end, Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system stands well positioned to emerge as the leading handheld platform by 2005."

The report, entitled "Mobile Handheld Devices: Enabling Enterprise Communications and Data Management," provides IT managers; corporate executives; and relevant network, enterprise application, and device suppliers with the following insights:

- A framework for understanding the mobile handheld devices marketplace;

- The benefits and challenges of deploying mobile handhelds across the enterprise;

- Identification of key trends, enabling technologies, and barriers to adoption;

- Analysis of the next generation of devices from both a form-factor and functionality perspective;

- Profiles of 19 key hardware and platform suppliers; and

- Forecasts for market size, PDA supplier market share, operating system (OS) market share, and enterprise versus consumer adoption.

Profiled suppliers include: Agenda Computing; AirSpeak, Inc.; Casio, Inc.; Compal PMCC; Compaq Computer Corporation; Fujitsu PC Corporation; HandEra, Inc.; Handspring; Hewlett-Packard; Hitachi America Ltd.; Mainstreet Networks; Microsoft Corporation; Palm, Inc.; Research in Motion Limited; Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd ; Sony Electronics, Inc.; Symbian Ltd.; and Symbol Technologies.
