Nextel Partners Launches First ''Four-in-one'' Wireless Service in Sioux City and Sioux Falls

SIOUX CITY, Iowa, Oct. 3, 2001-- Company Donates Free Phones to American Red Cross' Disaster Relief Efforts

Local businesses interested in increasing productivity and maximizing resources can now access the first "four-in-one" digital wireless service available in Sioux City, Iowa, Sioux Falls, S.D., and surrounding areas. This comes with today's official launch of Nextel Partners' all-digital wireless network and services combining digital cellular, digital two-way radio, wireless Internet access and text/numeric messaging, all in one compact phone.

Nextel Donates to American Red Cross

In conjunction with its launch, Nextel Partners is donating 10 wireless phones and free local service for a year to the American Red Cross -- Sioux Empire Chapter to enhance its disaster relief efforts, a total donation valued at nearly $15,000. Nextel Partners will officially present the donation to the American Red Cross today, Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. at the Sioux Empire Chapter headquarters, 808 West Avenue North in Sioux Falls.

The donation marks the first time the chapter has received wireless phones also equipped with a digital two-way radio, a feature that will enable instant communication between Red Cross staff and citizen volunteers participating in the organization's "Disaster Services Team." The phones are expected to improve critical coordination of relief efforts, enhance response time during emergencies, and give Sioux Falls staff the ability to access Red Cross counterparts in Omaha, Neb. The Omaha Chapter received free phones from Nextel Partners when it launched its service there in May 2000.

"The ability to communicate instantly with our Omaha Chapter will be extremely valuable as we respond to disasters that cross state lines," said Megan Chamberlain, Director of Emergency Services for the American Red Cross -- Sioux Empire Chapter. "Nextel Partners' donation also is particularly timely as we kick off Fire Awareness Month in October. Being able to communicate instantly with volunteers and local officials at different locations throughout the city -- and across the region -- will save precious time, and help us respond more quickly and better protect our communities."

Nextel Coverage Extends from Sioux Falls, S.D., to Grand Island, Neb.

Nextel Partners' all-digital wireless network extends along the frequently traveled corridors of Interstate 29 south from Sioux Falls through Vermillion, S.D., and Sioux City, Iowa, to Omaha, Neb., continuing on Interstate 80 southwest through Lincoln to Grand Island, Neb.; Highway 75 from Sioux City north through Le Mars and Sioux Center, Iowa, to Interstate 90; and from the intersection of Interstate 90 and Highway 75 west to Sioux Falls.

Sioux City and Sioux Falls customers will receive the latest in Nextel Direct Connect(R) two-way radio service. Recently enhanced, the service enables any Nextel customer, those of both Nextel Communications and Nextel Partners, to communicate with one another -- significantly increasing the number of colleagues, customers or suppliers available via two-way radio within their calling region. Using Nextel Direct Connect(R), a Nextel Partners customer in Sioux City, for example, can press one button and talk instantly with any other Nextel user in Sioux Falls and Vermillion, S.D.; Des Moines, Quad Cities, Dubuque and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Lincoln, Omaha and Grand Island, Neb.; and Kansas City, Mo. -- and pay no long-distance charges and avoid the hassles of voicemail.

Responding to business demand for mobile access to the Internet, Nextel Partners also offers Nextel Wireless Web services, providing customers with easy-to-use tools to access critical information online. Customers can trade investments, respond to time-sensitive e-mail, receive up-to-the-minute breaking news, plan a business trip, purchase last-minute gifts, and more.

The launch expands Nextel's and Nextel Partners' regional coverage, which already includes Lincoln, Omaha and Grand Island, Neb.; Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Quad Cities, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Cedar Falls/Waterloo, Ames and Marshalltown, Iowa; and Kansas City, Mo.

Morehart Joins as General Manager

To oversee its expansion in the region, Nextel Partners has hired Barry Morehart as General Manager. Bringing more than 10 years of wireless experience to the company, Morehart is responsible for managing the development of Nextel Partners' local wireless coverage network and launching the company's service in the region. Prior to joining Nextel Partners, he served as business sales manager for a wireless carrier in Dallas, Texas.

"Nextel Partners' service will offer strategic capabilities to businesses in the region. On a nationwide basis, no other carrier can eliminate the need for multiple communications devices with one simple and affordable solution," said Morehart. "Especially with the expanded reach of Nextel Direct Connect(R), our service is ideal for businesses that need instant access to co-workers, suppliers and business associates throughout the area, as well as the quality and security of digital service."

Nextel Partners' local representative is Jon Fisher, Direct Sales Manager, who can be reached at 605/231-5000. Nextel Partners' temporary regional office is located at 2500 West 49th St., Suite 200 in Sioux Falls. Effective November, the company's permanent address will be 5000 S. Minnesota Ave., Suite 100 in Sioux Falls. The company employs 10 people regionally to date.
