URL(s): qualcomm.com
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 4, 2001--
Full Range of 3G CDMA Solutions Now Available with Sampling of MSM5200
Chipset, Software and SURF Development Platform
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
digital wireless technology, today announced the worldwide availability of samples of the QUALCOMM CDMA
Technologies (QCT) MSM5200(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software, as well as the
accompanying Subscriber Unit Reference (SURF(TM)) development platform. The MSM5200 solution supports the Third
Generation Partnership Project Frequency Division Duplex (3GPP FDD) mode of Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) to
provide a peak data rate of 384 kilobits per second (kbps).
"Our MSM5200 chipset, system software and SURF platform, delivered to the market on schedule in the third quarter of
2001, represents a key milestone for our WCDMA development program," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM
CDMA Technologies. "With the availability of our sample chipset system solution and the close collaboration with
manufacturers and operators, QCT is enabling development that is essential to a successful launch of WCDMA."
The complete QUALCOMM WCDMA solution includes the MSM5200 modem, the RFT5200(TM) baseband-to-RF
(radio frequency) transmit processor, the RFR5200(TM) RF-to-baseband receive processor and the SURF development
platform.
As with all chipsets in the QCT product line, the MSM5200 WCDMA solution is compatible with the Wireless Internet
Launchpad(TM) suite of advanced technologies and software includes Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, UMTS
Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), and multimedia features such as Qtunes(TM), Moving Picture Experts Group
(MPEG-1) Layer-3 (MP3) player software support and Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) Musical Instrument Digital
Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia software. In addition to offering these features, the MSM5200 chip interfaces with
QCT's Mobile Station Processor (MSP(TM)) microprocessor family, which is designed to perform the functions associated
with personal digital assistant (PDA) applications, including support for streaming video using the MPEG-4 format. The
MSM5200 solution also supports QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM))
applications platform.
