SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 4, 2001--
World's First CF Card With Integrated GPS Receiver From Pretec for Use With Microsoft and Portable Internet Software
for Enriched Mobile Navigation
Pretec Electronics Corp., the innovator of CompactFlash I/O cards for Pocket PC, is announcing the retail launch of
CompactGPS(TM), the World's first CompactFlash card with built-in GPS receiver and a smart antenna. The product will
be available nationwide at retail stores of RCS, Fry's Electronics, Metreon Entertainment Center and on-line from
Handango.com, MobilePlanet.com, navtechgps.com and randmcnally.com.
The Plug-and-Play module of Pretec's CompactGPS(TM) PocketPak turns any Windows Powered Pocket PC into a
portable navigation device, which can be used for business travel as well as many industrial solutions. Pretec's
CompactGPS(TM) navigation expansion pack includes two mapping software applications; Microsoft Streets & Trips 2002
and Portable Internet's(TM) Port@ble Guide(TM).
"One of Microsoft's goals with Pocket PC 2002 is to provide users with a device that offers the most for work and play,"
said Andy Haon, director of Product Planning for the Mobility Division at Microsoft Corp. "Pretec has joined us on the path
toward realizing this goal with its CompactGPS(TM) PocketPak that will benefit users by providing a portable navigation
device that can be used for business travel or as industry solutions in the transportation, marine, aviation, surveying and
commercial markets."
Streets & Trips 2002 allows users to easily find addresses or place names and offers quality routing on 6.4 million miles of
streets and highways in the U.S. and Canada with detailed and colorful maps. It also includes more than 800,000 points of
interest. Streets & Trips 2002 works well for PCs and notebook computers and the accompanied Pocket Streets 2002 is
for Pocket PC.
In addition to maps for all 50 states, Port@ble Guide features route planning and GPS-guided voice navigation. Port@ble
Guide is upgradeable over the web to include thousands of reviews from Frommer's(TM) Travel Guides.
Using the CompactGPS device's built-in antenna, users can find their way on foot around the complex streets of
metropolitan areas much more easily. The optional external antenna (which can be vehicle-mounted) provides enhanced
sensitivity and performance making even remote and unfamiliar areas less intimidating. A wireless external antenna for use in
vehicles is another convenient option available soon. "Pretec has produced a truly 'compact' GPS unit," said Mike Flom,
CEO of Portable Internet Inc. "We are pleased to provide a unique, upgradeable application that makes the CompactFlash
GPS solution ideal for travelers both on foot and in a car."
At the Pocket PC Launch product showcase, Pretec will also demonstrate the application of CompactBT(TM), the
Bluetooth device in CompactFlash form factor. The Plug-and-Play module of Pretec's CompactBT(TM) PocketPak allows
Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002 to become an instant Bluetooth-enabled wireless device, which can transfer data,
voice, message and file without the need of physical wire among various hardware devices. The Pocket PC 2002 equipped
with Pretec's CompactBT(TM) will be shown to send, receive and exchange instant message with a Bluetooth-enabled
cellular phone handset.
Also shown in the launch event is the CompactTrio(TM), the world's first 3-in-1 CompactFlash converter that can
convert Multimedia Memory Card (MMC), Secure Digital (SD) memory card and Memory Stick (MS) to CompactFlash
form factor. With Pretec's CompactTrio(TM) and CompactSSFDC (the world's first Smart Media to CompactFlash
adapter), Pocket PC 2002 now can accommodate any of the small form factor memory cards today and tomorrow such as
MMC, SD, MS, and Smart Media.
In addition, Pretec will also demonstrate the movie play capability of Pocket PC 2002 by using Pretec's 640MB
CompactFlash card running Windows Media(TM) Video 8.0. As the largest capacity CF card in the world, Pretec 640MB
CF card has been the preferred choice of Kodak Professional for its 16 million pixel digital still camera since May of 2001.
