HOUSTON, PALO ALTO, Calif. & FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 4, 2001--
Jeode PDA Edition Gives iPAQ Pocket PC H3800 Customers Access To Rich
Java Applications And Content On Industry-Leading Pocket PC Device
Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ), Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW) and Insignia Solutions(R) (Nasdaq:INSG), the leading
provider of accelerated Java(TM)software solutions for information appliances, jointly announced today that Compaq is set to ship Java technology,
in the form of Insignia's Jeode(TM) PDA Edition, on every unit of Compaq's new iPAQ Pocket PC H3800 handheld computer. The iPAQ Pocket
PC H3800 will begin shipping in October with availability in November, according to Compaq.
This development further validates the importance of Java technology as an integral programming language and runtime environment for smart
handheld devices. It also, along with several related recent announcements, strongly positions Insignia as a leading Java virtual machine (JVM)
technology provider in the PDA and handheld device market. Insignia's Jeode technology has staked this leadership claim by providing a "Sun
Authorized Virtual Machine" with complete PersonalJava(TM) platform functionality, accelerated performance, responsive and robust Java
application behavior, and plug-in support for running Java applets within the Pocket Internet Explorer browser." Compaq, which has a long-standing
relationship with Insignia, began offering Jeode technology for iPAQ Pocket PC users via download on June 4.
The software download is an indicator of the strong demand that exists from both customers and developers for Java technology to be a
fundamental component of every iPAQ Pocket PC device. iPAQ Pocket PC users benefit from this development by being able to run sophisticated
Java technology-based programs, such as sales force automation, commerce, entertainment, mobile database and other applications that extend the
functionality and popularity of the Java platform for the enterprise to their devices. They also are rewarded with a richer, more complete Internet
experience that allows them to run the more than 7.2 million Java technology-enabled Web pages on the Internet, including games, chat, personalized
news tracking, real-time stock quotes and sports headlines, financial calculators and other dynamic content. In addition to its attributes as a
programming language, developers can leverage the cross platform support (Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM)), high degree of security, dynamic
extensibility, and Internet savvy of the Java platform.
"Java technology provides a secure, open platform which spans multiple devices. Application developers utilizing the Java platform can minimize
time to market, decrease development costs and increase revenue," said Aisling MacRunnels, director of marketing, Consumer & Embedded, Sun
Microsystems, Inc. "With Java technology embedded in every Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC H3800, consumers will be able to choose from a vast
array of interactive applications on demand."
"Insignia has demonstrated a real commitment to iPAQ Pocket PC developers and users in a variety of ways," said Cindy Box, director of
marketing for iPAQ Mobile Solutions, Compaq Computer Corp. "In addition to working closely with us to deliver a superior Java technology runtime
environment for the iPAQ Pocket PC, Insignia provides a download to allow customers to run Insignia's value-added software on their Pocket PCs.
They also support developers in creating exciting Java technology-based applications, which promises to greatly extend the functionality of the iPAQ
Pocket PC."
"We're very excited to see our accelerated Jeode technology deployed in such an popular, mass market product as the iPAQ Pocket PC," said
Richard Noling, chief executive officer of Insignia Solutions. "The adoption of Jeode technology in the iPAQ Pocket PC is an extremely important
milestone that supports our mobile wireless initiative and our objective to make Jeode PDA Edition the leading Java virtual machine environment for
Pocket PCs, PDAs and other types of smart handheld devices."
