URL(s): www.hp.com
PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 9, 2001--Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) today
introduced services and solutions that enable service providers and enterprises to offer enhanced, more efficient mobile
e-services. In addition, HP announced new mobility alliances with partners and highlighted customer deals with
Swisscom and WIND. The entire range of offerings and alliances are designed to empower mobile users to more
easily work and live their lives in motion.
"We are working with our partners and customers to allow mobile users to draw not only from the usefulness of a
single device, but also from services designed and delivered in the context of each environment they encounter," said
Rich Raimondi, vice president and general manager, HP Service Provider and Mobile Solutions Organization. "The
mobile solutions, services and alliances that we are announcing today -- and that we already have in place -- are
designed with this vision in mind."
Building upon HP's delivery of network management, Internet usage mediation and voice signal processing solutions,
the new technologies and solutions for mobile service providers and enterprises are as follows:
--
HP Opencall media platform -- An HP Netaction solution providing a highly scalable, high-performance,
high-density, carrier-grade service platform for the development and deployment of advanced voice interactive
services.
--
HP's mobile advertising solution -- A highly scalable advertising delivery system that is fully integrated with HP
Opencall media platform and enables service providers to offer sponsored airtime to subscribers when they sign
up to receive relevant, targeted advertising.
--
HP OpenView Service Information Portal mobile interface -- A mobile interface for HP OpenView Service
Information Portal v2.0 that provides views of network, service and performance management data through
mobile devices.
--
HP Self Service portal -- A Web-based, carrier-grade solution that enables the creation of personalized
self-service customer portals for business and consumer clients.
--
HP's mobile portal solution -- A customized solution based on HP Netaction software that provides the
infrastructure, portal framework and mobile applications required to rapidly deploy mobile portals as well as
deliver value-added services and personalized content to mobile devices.
Customized, Connected, Intelligent Devices
HP's mobile solutions help eliminate boundaries and limitations by enabling access to critical information, allowing
real-time decision making and increased productivity. HP is working to make mobile device connectivity simple and
easy for customers.
As part of that commitment, HP also announced today the HP Build-to-customer-order program. The program
allows customers in the United States to customize almost every aspect of their HP Omnibook and HP Pavilion
notebook PCs, including display size, processor speed, hard drive size, memory amount, multimedia drive, operating
system software and various wireless options.
Additionally, HP is distributing the Bluetooth Printer Adaptor from MPI Tech Data, which enables flexible wireless
printing from select HP printers via Bluetooth technology.
HP plans to announce later this month the HP Wireless Print Server wp110 that allows multiple business customers
who use PCs or Macs to easily connect and share a broad range of HP peripherals on an 802.11b wireless network.
Mobility Alliances and Customer Wins
HP has formed alliances with many partners that complement HP's mobile technologies, solutions and services.
Announced today are new mobility alliances with partners Aether Systems, Brience, CellExchange, iConverse,
Netonomy, Oracle and ViaFone.
HP and Swisscom Mobile have jointly developed a mobile portal solution that allows Swisscom Mobile to deliver
value-added services and personalized content via mobile devices to their customers. "We needed a reliable portal
infrastructure that would allow us to deploy new services rapidly. In addition, we wanted a responsive organization that
could help us to adapt to rapidly changing market conditions. That is why we chose HP," said Georges Schlegel, head
of business development, Swisscom Mobile.
HP Mobile e-Services Architecture
HP's extensive history in delivering complex solutions to the communications industry is being applied to the
comprehensive mobile solutions required by today's service providers, enterprises and mobile customers.
HP's technologies and solutions are being developed and delivered in the context of HP's Mobile e-Services
architecture, which provides a framework for the development and deployment of wireless infrastructure, mobile
e-services and intelligent, connected devices.
"For mobile wireless applications, both service providers and enterprise users need simple solutions for an inherently
complex process," said Phil Redman, research director for Gartner Inc. "It's going to take a well defined, integrated
architecture to address as many of the enterprise needs as possible to drive future adoption and usage of wireless data
services."
HP is opening two new Mobile e-Services Bazaar locations in Milan, Italy and London, England. HP is also opening
its European Cooltown II location in London, England.
