QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces Broad Rollout of 3G Devices Based on CDMA2000 1X Chipset
URL(s): www.qualcomm.com
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 9, 2001--
More than 43 Handset and PC Card Designs Based on QCT's MSM5105 Chipset Available to Support Wide Range
of Form Factors for 3G Services Worldwide
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access
(CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that more than 43 designs for third-generation (3G)
CDMA2000 1X handsets and PC cards currently are being implemented by QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies
(QCT) customers worldwide. Initial deployment of these products -- based on the QCT MSM5105(TM) Mobile
Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software, a second-generation CDMA2000 1X solution -- is
expected in North America by the end of this calendar year. Derivatives of these products are also planned for 3G
CDMA2000 1X deployments in Latin America, China, Australia, India and Asia over the next 12 months.
"The rapid rollout of MSM5105-based handsets exemplifies our close working relationships with operators and
manufacturers worldwide," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "By working closely
with our partners in North America and around the world, we have ensured that the feature sets and applications
supported by the MSM5105 solution meet the development and production requirements of handset manufacturers
and the growing 3G services planned by CDMA2000 1X network operators. QCT provides complete solutions that
address the widely segmented market needs for 3G voice and data products and their associated services."
The MSM5105 chipset and system software solution, QCT's mid-tier product in its 3G CDMA2000 1X MSM
product portfolio, supports CDMA2000 1X at a maximum of 153 kilobits per second (kbps) for forward link. The
MSM5105 was developed specifically to provide handset manufacturers and operators with the most cost-effective
3G CDMA2000 1X solutions for network deployments.
The MSM5105 solution is based on the industry-proven IS-95 MSM3100(TM) chipset architecture, and is fully
pin-compatible with MSM3100-based IS-95A/B designs to allow manufactures to rapidly convert to CDMA2000
1X-based solutions. The MSM5105 3G chipset products offer network operators up to twice the voice capacity of
IS-95A/B chipsets, as well as enabling QCT Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM) suite features, including Compact
Media Extension (CMX(TM)) Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia services; Removable
User Identity Module (R-UIM) interface; streaming video; file transmission; and Web browsing. The MSM5105
solution also supports QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) applications
platform.
Initially, the MSM5105 chipset solutions are targeted for markets in the United States, Latin America, India and
China, which need cost-optimized as well as higher-end, feature-rich CDMA2000 handsets. Leading North American,
Korean, Chinese and Japanese CDMA handset manufacturers are in advanced product development to support these
markets. Innovative products with form factors ranging from phones and PCMCIA cards to embedded modules are
being developed to support the traditional handset market, and the emerging data markets enabled by 3G
CDMA2000.
