QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces Production Shipment of MSM5100 Third-Generation CDMA2000 1X Solution with Advanced Position Location Capabilities
URL(s): www.qualcomm.com
SAN DIEGO, Oct 11, 2001 -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital
wireless technology, today announced production shipment of the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM5100(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and
system software. There are currently more than 50 products in development by manufacturers worldwide, with initial launches anticipated by the end of the year. The
MSM5100 solution allows manufacturers to develop state-of-the-art third-generation (3G) handsets that feature the highest level of integration and the most complete set of
position location, multimedia and other advanced features available in the wireless industry.
"The MSM5100 solution is designed to address 3G requirements of carriers worldwide," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "We are proud
to see the strong and widespread market acceptance of CDMA2000 1X technology using the MSM5100 chipset and system software solution, which brings to market its
accurate position location and advanced multimedia features."
The MSM5100 chipset and system software is pin-compatible with the proven MSM3300(TM) chipset, decreasing time-to-market for handset manufacturers, and is
designed with the flexibility to support global CDMA2000 1X market requirements and operator deployment strategies. Combining Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM)
applications with 3G CDMA2000 1X technology, the MSM5100 solution delivers the highest level of system integration for 3G handsets. The MSM5100 chipset and system
software solution supports the CDMA2000 Release 0 specification. The MSM5100 chipset is also capable of supporting up to 307 kilobits per second (kbps) in the forward
link. Combining the high packet data capability with a rich set of applications -- including gpsOne(TM) position location support, Qtunes(TM) Moving Picture Experts Group
(MPEG-1) Layer-3 (MP3) player software, Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia software and Java -- the
MSM5100 solution will drive the rollout of many new and differentiated devices to support the rapid growth of exciting new 3G services from operators worldwide. For the
North America market, the MSM5100 system solution also supports the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Enhanced 911 (E911) mandate to provide
emergency services to a growing subscriber base during 2002.
In addition to QCT's Wireless Internet Launchpad suite, the MSM5100 solution supports QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM))
applications platform, and enables low-cost implementation of Bluetooth(TM) connectivity by integrating a qualified Bluetooth baseband processor and software stack
supporting the Bluetooth 1.1 specification.
The gpsOne solution, which integrates SnapTrack(TM) technology with Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite and network information, provides a high-availability
solution that offers industry-leading accuracy and performance. The gpsOne solution will provide the world's most available and cost-effective solution for wireless position
location technology in a mobile handset for CDMA cellular and Personal Communications Service (PCS) networks, and will meet the FCC mandate requiring wireless
operators to provide the location of 911 calls. The MSM5100 solution will also enable a broad range of future 3G GPS-related software and services, including navigation
information, area-specific weather forecasts, traffic reports and commercial tracking services, as well as a broad range of entertainment applications, including online chat
and bulletin boards.
