China to become the world's largest mobile market in 2002
URL(s): www.wirelessworldforum.com/china.html
Despite reports midway through this year that China had surpassed the USA in
terms of mobile phone subscribers, a new report by Wireless World Forum
reveals that China is still some 40 million subscribers short of that
target. However at current growth rates, China is expected to take the
number one position by mid 2002.
By the end of this year the reports estimates the number of subscribers in
China to rise to 111 million, representing a year-on-year growth of some 42
million users. The market far from being saturated - will only just touch 9
percent, compared to 50-70% across most of Western Europe.
Graham Brown, executive partner at Wireless World Forum comments "The
Chinese market is certainly awakening. The introduction of pre-pay, lack of
fixed line deployment and massive infrastructure investment by both Chinese
and foreign telecommunications companies are all factors conducive to the
creation of one of the most important wireless markets in the world within
3-5 years. What China represents is a huge opportunity for mobile data
services - take SMS for example, in the UK we hit 1 billion messages last
month, now imagine the potential in a country 20 times the size."
The report is aimed at providing readers with an upto date overview of the
Chinese wireless market enabling them to make informed decisions on the
opportunities that China offers as a potential strategic market for their
organisation, their products and their services.
