SpeechWorks Introduces OpenSpeech Server, Extending the OpenSpeech Product Line to Perform in Client-Server Environment

PHOENIX, Oct. 15, 2001-- Provides Architecture Choice for Customers Deploying Network-Based Speech Systems Conversations 2001--At its annual user group conference, SpeechWorks International, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPWX), a global leader in speech recognition and text-to-speech (TTS) technologies and services, today introduced OpenSpeech Server(TM) software, the latest offering in the company's standards-based OpenSpeech(TM) product line. This new product allows customers to operate their systems in a standards-based client-server environment, if they so choose. OpenSpeech Server works in conjunction with SpeechWorks' OpenSpeech Recognizer(TM) software, the speech recognition engine optimized for VoiceXML, the emerging standard for speech-activated services.

OpenSpeech Server software provides a speech recognition solution for companies such as telecommunication providers, carriers and ASPs whose speech services might benefit from a client-server architecture. SpeechWorks recognizes that customers and partners have different goals and requirements when designing speech systems and in response, SpeechWorks has delivered speech systems in both integrated and client-server architectures on a variety of platforms in the past. Companies looking to deploy standards-based speech services can select the architecture that best fits their needs and business goals, be that client-server with OpenSpeech Server or in an integrated unit, where the OpenSpeech Recognizer software is integrated within the voice response unit.

"More and more enterprises are demanding speech technology from Telera's service provider customers. SpeechWorks' OpenSpeech Server offers the scalability service providers need to meet that demand," said Scott Seawell, vice president of marketing for Telera, a SpeechWorks partner. "SpeechWorks has created a very important product to accompany our Voice Web Application Platform(TM)."

OpenSpeech Server software offers the following benefits to customers:

-- A Choice in Architectures: OpenSpeech Server adds architecture flexibility to the OpenSpeech product line, giving users the choice in system architecture to best fit their needs. In addition, OpenSpeech Server enables a flexible migration path so that a developer can perform telephony integration and application development with the OpenSpeech Recognizer in a non-client-server structure, and then, if preferred for whatever reason in the future, the OpenSpeech Server ensures a simple migration.

-- High Performance: OpenSpeech Server software allows applications designed with very large grammars to distribute the task of recognition among many servers. Dividing memory and CPU-intensive recognition tasks among multiple servers can result in high efficiency and enhanced system performance.

-- Scalability: Using OpenSpeech Server software, companies can build speech solutions that can scale quickly. In the client-server environment, businesses can increase speech and telephony capacity at different rates, making it ideal for businesses that plan to regularly increase speech processing, but do not expect the number of callers or required phone lines to increase accordingly.

-- Ideal for Service Bureau Environments: The client-server architecture is ideal for service bureau environments and telcos that must leverage network infrastructure in order to deliver multiple applications seamlessly to a single telephone call. These environments benefit from the flexibility and scalability that OpenSpeech Server software provides.

OpenSpeech Server software gives businesses the option of running speech solutions in a client-server environment by enabling the separation of the recognition engine, SpeechWorks' OpenSpeech Recognizer, from the speech solution's telephony component, placing each on separate, dedicated machines. To accomplish this, the OpenSpeech Server software creates a bridge between the recognition engine and the telephony client using an IP network. OpenSpeech Server allows a call that reaches the telephony client to be assigned to one of a number of speech recognition servers. The server communicates across IP networks using standard protocols with which network operators are familiar.

"Previously, SpeechWorks delivered client-server or integrated unit architectures for customers on a variety of platforms. The addition of OpenSpeech Server gives our customers more flexibility and provides a new standards-based, client-server system architecture," said Steve Chambers, vice president of worldwide marketing, SpeechWorks. "We designed this product line with the customer in mind to deliver maximum investment protection and fast time to market, all available in an open, standards-based environment."

Pricing and Availability

OpenSpeech Server software will be available from SpeechWorks and select partners in Q4 2001. For per port pricing information, please contact your SpeechWorks sales representative. The OpenSpeech Server will be showcased during Conversations 2001 in the Interactive Demo Room.
