Bainbridge Island, Wash. – (October 15, 2001) – Airbiquity, a wireless technology company that delivers location information across all wireless networks, today announced the award of multiple patents. The patents add to Airbiquity’s considerable patent portfolio, strengthening its position within the telematics, wireless, and mobile location industries.
The newly registered patents are as follows:
… U.S. Patent 6,236,652 – GeoSpatial Internet Protocol Addressing. Airbiquity has secured a unique mobile Internet addressing schema that integrates both the universal Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) standard and Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates into a unitary framework for identifying mobile objects by the three dimensions of space, and precise time. This patent provides for conversion of latitude, longitude, altitude, and time to an addressing scheme that supports TCP/IP V4 and future addressing (IP V6) requirements. The Geographical Internet Protocol (geoIP) addressing facilitates anycast routing where the nearest node has a statically-assigned geoIP. Applications and services expected from this technology include new levels of remote mobile device management over a wireless network; remote asset configuration and upgrades based on GPS-determined location; and enterprise-based security and inventory services to track devices operating across a variety of network topologies.
… U.S. Patent D448,366 – Accessory Module for a Cellular Telephone Handset. Airbiquity has obtained a design patent on the unique industrial and mechanical design aspects of its GPS Accessory product, which is currently being sold by Airbiquity value-added resellers (VARs). Airbiquity also received patents for this product in the United Kingdom (No. 2,101,210), Canada (No. 12,374), and Austria (No. 45,273). Patents are pending in eight additional countries.
“These patents underscore the strength of Airbiquity’s position, within a variety of devices, in this relatively new field of location-based services,” notes André Fournier, chief technical officer at Airbiquity. “Products derived from these patents, both today and in later releases, will enable our top-tier customers to confidently provide differentiated offerings their end-users.”
