The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC
Mobile) has been chosen by China Mobile Communications
Corporation (CMCC) as major supplier to expand CMCC's
GPRS-based mobile internet services in nine provinces in
China. China Mobile is China's largest mobile carrier with a
current customer base topping 92 million. The implementation
of the complete GPRS solution will be realized by Siemens
Shanghai Mobile Communications Ltd. (SSMC). The whole
project will already be completed in November 2001.
Following the successful start of the GPRS pilot network in
China in the beginning of 2000, CMCC builds up a commercial
network in the second phase of GPRS rollout. Within this
project, Siemens IC Mobile will deploy GPRS core network
technology for CMCC's subsidiaries Anhui Mobile, Xinjiang
Mobile and Tibet Mobile. Thereby Siemens IC Mobile will
upgrade the existing mobile radio equipment with new
software and new hardware modules for the Base Station
Controllers to allow GPRS functionality. In total, the GPRS
network upgrade will involve 38 cities in nine provinces,
autonomous regions or municipalities.
Mobile systems for China are manufactured by the Siemens
Shanghai Mobile Communications Ltd. (SSMC) joint venture.
Established in 1993, this joint venture of Siemens AG (60%),
Shanghai Video and Audio Corporation (26%), Shanghai Mobile
Communications Ltd. (10%) and the First Research Institute
of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (4%) develops,
manufactures and distributes GSM mobile switching and base
station infrastructure as well as mobile phones.
The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC
Mobile) offers the complete range of mobile solutions
including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications.
Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile
organizers and cordless phones as well as products for
wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio
includes the complete range of GSM, GPRS and UMTS mobile
network technologies from base stations and switching
systems to intelligent networks, e.g. for prepaid services.
Applications cover mobile services for Unified Messaging,
Location Based Services and Mobile Payment. For the fiscal
year 2000 (which ended September 30, 2000), IC Mobile
recorded sales of EUR 9 billion and EBIT of EUR 758 million.
The group employs 29,840 employees worldwide. (March 31,
