QUALCOMM Subsidiary SnapTrack Executive Testifies at U.S. Senate Subcommittee Hearing on E911
URL(s): www.qualcomm.com
SAN DIEGO - October 17, 2001 - QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM),
pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital
wireless technology, announced that Bret Sewell, president of QUALCOMM
subsidiary SnapTrack, Inc., testified today before the U.S. Senate's
Committee on Commerce Science and Transportation, Subcommittee on
Communications. The hearing, "Enhanced 911 (E911) and Public Safety,"
explored the progress of a nationwide E911 system.
"QUALCOMM is pleased that the deployment of its position location
solution has begun so that over 100 million Americans who use wireless
phones can, at long last, enjoy the added protection of the enhanced 911
service," Sewell said in his prepared testimony. "QUALCOMM's position
location technology, which gives the police and other public safety
agencies the highest levels of accuracy (typically within 10 to 30
meters) to pinpoint the location of wireless callers to 911, has been
extensively tested; is already deployed in Japan; and on October 1,
Sprint PCS began selling phones containing QUALCOMM's chips with this
technology."
"QUALCOMM's technology provides a level of precision in position location
that exceeds the FCC's requirements, and does so for all major air
interfaces," commented Jonas Neihardt, vice president of Federal
Government Affairs at QUALCOMM, on this testimony. "Therefore, we are
pleased that the FCC's new E911 orders maintain the current E911 accuracy
requirements, which are necessary for our nation's public safety
personnel to save lives. We are also pleased that CDMA carriers have
been granted nominal extensions of time to accommodate the delivery dates
of their various suppliers."
Sewell's complete testimony is available at www.qualcomm.com, and was
carried live on CSPAN-3.
