Nextel Communications, Motorola and Detroit Lions Take Part in National Wireless Phone Collection Campaign to Aid Domestic Violence Victims
URL(s): www.ncadv.org
DETROIT, Oct. 18, 2001--
Lions Fans Can Donate Their Used Wireless Phones at Silverdome on Oct. 21
The Detroit Lions and Motorola (NYSE:MOT), partnering with Nextel Communications, and in conjunction with the Wireless
Foundation, will host a wireless phone collection drive at the Pontiac Silverdome as part of the national Donate a Phone CALL
to PROTECT program to benefit victims of domestic violence.
The wireless phones will be collected at the five main entrances at the Silverdome beginning at 10:00 am when the gates
open through 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2001.
Donated phones will either be refurbished and provided to victims of domestic violence or sold with proceeds from the sale
being used to support the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) and other domestic violence programs.
This season, 30 NFL teams will each host a Donate a Phone collection drive at their home stadium where football fans will
be encouraged to donate their used wireless phones. Since launching in September 1999, the Donate a Phone program has
resulted in the collection of nearly half a million wireless phones from people across the country.
"Wireless technology can be a powerful tool for domestic violence victims," said David S. Diggs, Executive Director, and the
Wireless Foundation. "A wireless phone in the hands of a victim can serve as a lifeline, providing instant access to emergency
service. With the simple act of hosting a wireless phone collection day, the Detroit Lions will help protect thousands of domestic
violence victims from further abuse."
How the Program Works
Once the phones have been collected, newer phones in good condition will be recycled and distributed to victims. Older
phones or phones in need of serious repair will be sold, with proceeds used to support the National Coalition Against Domestic
Violence and other domestic violence programs. Phones without value are recycled in accordance with all applicable
environmental regulations.
"As a co-founder of the Donate a Phone program and proud sponsor of the NFL, Motorola is pleased to bring the power of
the NFL and wireless technology together in an effort to stop domestic violence," said Tim Cawley, corporate vice president
and general manager, North America Region, Motorola, Inc. "With the simple action of the Detroit Lions fans bringing in their
used phones, countless lives will be touched."
"With the help of a majority of the NFL teams and the Donate a Phone program, thousands of domestic violence victims will
be able to regains their freedom," said Rita Smith, executive Director of the NCDV. "Not only will women in domestic violence
situations be helped, but the public will be educated on the issue of domestic violence and learn how they can help."
Anyone wishing to donate a wireless phone and will not be in the Detroit area can call 1-888-901-SAFE or visit
