The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. to Roll Out Symbol Handheld Computers for Route Accounting Operations

Symbol's First Major Route Accounting Customer To Use Advanced Mobile Computer As State-Of-The-Art CRM Tool
Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), announced today that The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. (NYSE:PBG), of Somers,
N.Y., is purchasing Symbol's next-generation handheld computer for its team of route accounting personnel to enhance route
delivery service operations.
Symbol will provide The Pepsi Bottling Group with a version of its recently introduced Pocket PC 2002 ruggedized computer
family under a contract worth approximately $20 million. The computers will be delivered and put into action beginning in the
second quarter of 2002.
The Symbol computer, viewed as central to customer management, will allow The Pepsi Bottling Group's selling and delivery
team to provide maximum service to its retail customers.

The product includes important features that can increase a route accounting team's efficiency, including a color
high-resolution screen for clear display of information indoors and outdoors, the Microsoft PocketPC 2002 operating system for
robust application development, and a powerful 32-bit processor from Intel.
Product options include Symbol's integrated Spectrum24(R) 11 Mbps 802.11b wireless LAN or choice of wide area network
connectivity. It is highly ruggedized to withstand multiple drops to concrete and extreme variations of weather, and
accommodates a compact flash slot for data recovery protection. With a multitude of features and benefits, the Symbol mobile
