WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct 19, 2001 -- Cingular's Chief, Stephen Carter, received a Corporate Leader Award for Diversity Best Practices at the National
Diversity Gala, which was held at the Ronald Reagan and International Trade Center in Washington D.C. last night. The award honors business, government, and cultural leaders for
making diversity and equal opportunity a priority within their organizations.
Since the company's inception last year, Carter has spearheaded Cingular's diversity initiatives, which are an integral part of the company's commitment to individuals' rights of
self-expression and individuality. Cingular the second largest wireless carrier in the U.S. is on the forefront of diversity leadership. Beyond the company's diverse hiring practices
Cingular was the first U.S. carrier to launch a Hispanic Wireless Internet Portal, has received advertising awards for its 2001 Super Bowl campaign and has supported cultural
organizations such as the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts.
"At Cingular, we began with a decision that diversity is a good thing," said Carter. "As a company that was founded on the value of human self- expression, we understand how
inherently diverse and powerful self-expression is. We strive to attract and maintain a talented and well-trained workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities in which we do
business. It is this diversity that has cultivated a work environment where all employees can perform at their fullest potential."
Attendees of the National Diversity Gala remained confident that coming together during this crucial time would help ward off recession. "The well- being of our economy rests not on
our political leaders, but on our business leaders," said Edie Fraser, founder and CEO of Diversity Best Practices. "Stephen and the Cingular team are the model of corporate
diversity and bear that responsibility with pride. It is for this reason that we honor him with this award."
The first-ever National Diversity Gala was the seminal event for minorities and women in business to build networks, share advice, and inspire one another. The Gala recognized those
on the vanguard of equality, including leaders from business, government, the media, entertainment, and social organizations. Attendees included several federal, state, and
municipal leaders, representatives from 100 Fortune 500 companies, leaders from 16 government departments and agencies, members of 120 women's and minority business
organizations, and students from 115 universities.
Notable attendees included Dr. Maya Angelou; James Brown, Fox Television; Tom Joyner, ABC Radio Networks; Norm Mineta, Secretary, US Department of Transportation; Larry
Cockell, Deputy Director, Secret Service and Governor Sila Calderon of Puerto Rico.
