IRVINE, CA, October 23, 2001 — Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), the world’s leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), announced today that its PRISM WLAN technology has been incorporated into the new NetVision® wireless telephony devices from Symbol Technologies (NYSE: SBL), which deliver wireless voice and data communications by combining Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless LAN technology.
The NetVision Phone is an 802.11b wireless IP telephone and the NetVision DataPhone is an 802.11b wireless IP telephone and Web client with an integrated bar code scanner. Both new products enable voice and data communications over the Symbol Spectrum24 High Rate wireless LAN and other select 802.11b wireless data networks. Each devices employs telephony based on the ITU standard H.323 and support Quality of Service (QoS) and voice prioritization when deployed over Spectrum24 High Rate. This ability to send voice and data over one wireless network can result in significant savings and allows for the development of new applications that increase productivity and provide better customer service. The NetVision family of 802.11b wireless IP telephony devices are designed to support gateway products from Cisco Systems, Ericsson, Mitel, Nortel Networks, and Dialogic.
"With shipments of IP based PBX’s and Wi-Fi (802.11b) both growing, it is exciting to see the convergence of these two technologies. This adds value to wireless LANs, making them more cost-efficient and easier to manage, while enhancing communication within the enterprise", said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager for Intersil’s Wireless Networking Business. "Applications continue to grow that take advantage of 802.11b’s ability to support voice and data. Intersil is pleased to be a part of Symbol’s innovative design and looks forward to continued development efforts with them in the future. "
"Wi-Fi is emerging as the strongest global standard for wireless interoperability and is a logical choice for enterprise users to add integrated wireless voice and data devices, " said Ray Martino, vice president of wireless network products at Symbol Technologies, Inc. "We’re confident that Intersil’s leading WLAN technology coupled with our radio and networking systems expertise will be a winning combination in delivery mobility and driving the market for wireless IP telephony devices. "
Intersil’s PRISM chip sets are the most highly integrated WLAN silicon solutions on the market. PRISM chip sets deliver wireless Ethernet networking with compliance to the Wi-Fi global standard. Optimized for high data rate (11 Mbps) performance, PRISM-based systems are feature-rich and provide fast, reliable performance in all types of networking environments. Advanced design and process technologies reduce power consumption, design complexity and total system cost.
The Global Wireless Market Embraces PRISM WLAN Technology
"Intersil is the number one manufacturer of wireless LAN chipsets and has been a driving force behind the success of WLANs, " said a May 2001 WLAN report from Cahners In-Stat Group. Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, industry-leading companies including Actiontec, Alcatel, ASUS, Casio, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, D-Link, GemTek, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel, Legend, Linksys, Nokia, Nortel, Panasonic, Quanta, Samsung, Sharp, Siemens, SOHOware, Sony, SpectraLink, Symbol, Z-Com and Zoom have incorporated PRISM chip sets in Wi-Fi product designs. PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEE’s 802.11 global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11-based systems.
