Palm Kicks Off Holiday Promotions With Free Expansion Card and New Low Price On Palm m505 Color Handheld

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov 1, 2001 - For savvy shoppers who want the latest in handheld functionality and versatility, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today kicks off the holiday season with product demonstrations and a promotional offer that showcase Palm's dual-expansion architecture. With the purchase of a Palm(TM) m125, m500 or m505 handheld, shoppers can mail in for a free 16MB Panasonic Secure Digital (SD) expansion card and $250 worth of coupons for additional expansion products. The promotion starts today and runs through Jan. 7, 2002.

In addition, Palm has lowered the price on its Palm m505 color handheld, resulting in an estimated street price of $399 (previously $449).

Expansion capabilities enable Palm customers to add an array of functionality to their Palm handhelds, including additional memory or new content, such as a road atlas or dictionary; and add-on hardware, such as a wireless modem, keyboard or camera.

As part of the promotion, Palm, the world's leading provider of handheld computers, is encouraging shoppers to try out the dual-expansion capabilities with in-store and sidewalk demonstrations across the country. "Demo Days," which take place from early November to mid-December, provide shoppers hands- on experience with personal product instruction and education. In-store demonstrations will be held in 150 key retail locations in the top 25 metropolitan markets. The sidewalk demonstrations, marked by Palm branded vehicles and banners, will take place in high-traffic locations in the top 12 markets.

"One of the hottest gifts this holiday season will be Palm handhelds, and we want consumers to understand all the benefits of dual expansion that come with our newest products -- the Palm m125, m500 and m505 handhelds," said Caitlin Spaan, director of marketing programs at Palm, Inc. "Customers can experience expansion the way it was meant to be, easily sliding in software and attaching devices that open up entirely new ways to use a Palm handheld. Whether you want to play games, read eBooks, take digital photos, access highway maps in the car, or just have added memory on hand for special applications, Palm's expansion options bring the world to your fingertips."

The Palm Expansion Experience

Palm's two-way expansion capabilities, part of the m125, m500 and m505 handhelds, include an expansion slot to add MultiMediaCard and SD cards, and the Palm Universal Connector for hardware attachments. The postage stamp-sized cards fit neatly into the expansion card slot, and are the smallest and lightest way to expand the capabilities of any handheld. Palm expansion cards can back up data, increase memory and add content, such as games, eBooks and reference materials. The Universal Connector makes it easy to attach a variety of portable devices, such as the Kodak PalmPix(R) camera for digital camera functionality; the Minstrel m500 Modem for real-time transmissions with speeds up to 19.2 kbps; and the Navman GPS, which converts a Palm handheld into a navigation aid.

Users also have the ability to use both expansion features at once. For example, the PalmPak(R) Travel Card: Rand McNally Road Atlas, inserted into the expansion slot, can be used with the Navman GPS receiver, connected to the Universal Connector, to give users the ability to track their movements on the displayed maps.

Offer Details

The holiday promotion is a mail-in offer. Customers submit the redemption form (available at participating retails stores), the original signs, and Novatel Wireless. This offer is valid only, where permitted, in the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.

The Palm m505 Handheld

The stylish, ultra-slim and lightweight Palm m505 handheld combines expandability, flexibility and versatility with a high-contrast color screen that supports more than 65,000 colors. It features the Palm Expansion Card slot and the Palm Universal Connector. Users can read email, Word and Excel documents, and eBooks; view spreadsheets, video clips and photos; or browse web content with the new high-contrast display (1). Palm introduced the Palm m505 handheld in March 2001.

About SD Expansion Cards

Palm's expansion card slot is based on an open standard supported by an association of more than 300 leading manufacturers, including Panasonic, Kodak, Sharp, JVC and Motorola. These manufacturers are committed to creating new hardware and software solutions that can integrate with a Palm handheld through the expansion slot and the Palm Universal Connector. This means that Palm customers have a wide selection of add-on software and devices in the handheld market.
